DON’T FORGET TO VACUUM YOUR CARPETS! 🧹
Precious metal dust is heavy, meaning it settles onto the floor and can easily be walked around your workshop — and even outside — without you realising it. Vacuum your workshop daily and keep all vacuum bags, as they can contain valuable recoverable metal.
Using carpet mats or tiles around your benches helps trap dust and filings efficiently, making reclamation easier.
Never throw away old workshop carpets or mats either — if possible, cut them up and place them straight into your Mastermelt sweep bag.
Every particle counts 💲

Cleaning or changing out the filter bags on your dust extraction unit can be extreamly beneficial, not only making you run more efficiently but you can reap the rewards from the precious metal in the 'dust'.

No matter the size of your setup, we recommend changing your filter bags at least once a year to keep your extraction working efficiently and capturing valuable polishing dust.

And remember — you don’t need a huge system. Even a small vacuum cleaner can collect surprising amounts of precious metal over time 💰

Get in touch if you have an extraction unit that needs cleaning or filters changing, as we can help with this [email protected]

🚫 Do NOT put these in your jewellery workshop sweep bag:
• Plastics & packaging (gloves, plastic bags, wrappers, cling film)
• Steel or base metals (iron, screws, tools, staples, pins)
• Large solid metal pieces (these should be separated and sent as scrap)
• Chemicals & liquids (acids, solutions, pickle, oils, solvents)
• Electronic waste (circuit boards, wires, batteries)
• Food waste or organic material (paper towels with food, coffee cups, etc.)
• General rubbish (dustpan waste not related to bench work)
• Sharps or hazardous items (blades, needles, broken glass)
• Aerosols or pressurised containers
• Excessive non-metal materials (rubber, foam, large amounts of cloth)

✅ Rule of thumb:
If it doesn’t contain precious metal dust or come directly from bench work (filing, polishing, soldering, etc.), it probably shouldn’t go in your sweep bag.

The safest way to recover any dust from them is to wipe them down with a wet wipe and add that to your sweep bag 🧻

Keeping your sweeps clean ensures safer handling, more accurate processing, and better returns.

If you're ever unsure of what to add to you sweep, drop us a DM or contact a member of the team [email protected]

We LOVE wet wipes....
Wet wipes are one of the simplest — and most overlooked — ways to recover precious metals in a jewellery workshop.

Every time you handle metal, tiny particles of gold, silver, platinum or palladium are left behind on your hands, tools, benches and even overhead surfaces like shelves and lights. These particles are often too fine to see, but over time they build up into a surprisingly valuable source of reclaimable material.

By using wet wipes throughout the day — wiping your hands before washing, cleaning down your bench, tools and surrounding surfaces — you’re actively capturing that fine polishing dust and metal residue instead of letting it go down the drain or disappear into the workshop environment. Even areas you might not think about, like light fittings or extraction units, can hold valuable dust.

The key is consistency. Make it part of your daily routine and always dispose of used wipes into your sweep bag. When processed, these wipes can contribute significantly to your overall precious metal return.

In short: what seems like simple cleaning is actually smart recovery. Don’t underestimate the value sitting in your workshop dust.

Why Jewellers Don’t Need to Keep Their Lemel Separate!
Jewellers often ask whether they should keep their precious metal lemels carefully separated — gold with gold, silver with silver, platinum on its own — before sending it to us.
The short answer: there’s no need. Here’s why.
🔥 We Already Specialise in Separation
When taking a sample from the melting process, our in-house lab can analyse what percentage of metals are in your lemel. Whether your lemel is mixed, soldered, or contains multiple alloys, the reclamation & assay process will efficiently detect each precious metal.
💲 No Loss of Value
Keeping lemel separate won’t increase your return. We assay every job separately to determine the exact precious metal content, and you’re paid based on the recovered gold, silver, platinum, or palladium. Mixing doesn’t dilute value.
⏳ Saves You Time and Effort
Separating lemel at the bench can be time-consuming and fiddly, especially when the filings, sprues, and offcuts are already a mix of alloys. By sending it as-is, you can focus on your craft and let us do the heavy lifting.
💰Consistent, Accurate Returns
We process mixed sweeps and lemel every day. Our systems are built for accuracy, ensuring you receive a fair settlement regardless of how mixed the material is when it arrives.
🫧 One Simple Rule: Keep it Clean
The only real requirement is to avoid unnecessary contamination — keep lemel free from plastic, base metals (steel), or any other non-precious waste. Beyond that, there’s no need for you to separate it by metal type.

✅ Bottom line: You don’t need to spend valuable time sorting your lemel. Just collect, keep it clean, and let us take care of the rest.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of David Doyle, a leading figure of the jewellery trade.

For decades, he was a well-respected and much-loved figure within our industry — someone whose knowledge, integrity and quiet generosity helped shape the community we are proud to be part of today. His contribution to the trade went far beyond business; he built lasting relationships, supported countless colleagues, and carried himself with warmth and sincerity.

He will be hugely missed, especially at the many charity events he so passionately championed. His commitment to giving back was unwavering, and he inspired others to support causes close to his heart. Those events will simply not be the same without his presence, energy and encouragement.

Above all, he was a devoted family man. He spoke of his family with immense pride, and it was clear that they were at the centre of everything he did. That same loyalty and kindness extended to his friendships — and we at Mastermelt were proud to call him not only a valued member of the trade, but a good friend.

Our thoughts are with his family and all who knew him. His legacy within the jewellery community will endure, and he will be remembered with great respect and affection.

From all of us at Mastermelt 💛
