Thomas Cubitt’s signature from the 1811 deed leasing his first workshop. Probably the earliest known signature of the great master builder of Belgravia and many other places. But was he quite as straight dealing as others have claimed? Maybe not! When Cubitt was developing The Calthorpe Estate he simply fenced in an area of ground that wasn’t his and used it as his yard! https://www.olbc.co.uk/the-calthorpe-estate/

Beaumont took the money from The County Fire Office, of which he was MD. The shareholders weren’t too pleased about it as he granted himself what looks like a 110% mortgage [maybe Northern Rock didn’t invent them?]

John Augustus Beaumont bought The Wimbledon Park Estate in three main lumps [This deed plan is from the 1845 purchase].
1842 - Duke of Sutherland - £40,500
1843 - Earl Spencer - £14,250
1845 - Earl Spencer - £80,000
So Beaumont spent a whopping £134,750 (and change) buying 1,200 acres of prime Southwest London.
Where did this much money come from?.
