“Does retrofit underfloor heating raise floor height?”
Not necessarily.
The answer depends largely on the installation method.
👉 Traditional overlay systems achieve underfloor heating by adding new boards or layers on top of the existing floor, which can increase floor levels and create knock-on considerations around doors, thresholds, staircases, kitchens and room transitions.
Channel-cut retrofit systems work differently.
✅ By precision milling channels directly into the existing screed or concrete floor, the pipework is installed within the floor structure itself rather than on top of it. This significantly reduces floor build-up and allows the existing floor construction to be utilised more effectively.
In practice, the underfloor heating system itself does not create structural floor build-up. ❌
However, depending on the condition of the existing floor, a small amount of levelling compound may be required before the final floor finish is installed, typically far less than with many overlay solutions.
🛠 This approach is particularly valuable in renovation projects where preserving existing floor levels is important, whether that's due to bifold door thresholds, fitted kitchens, staircase geometry or continuity between adjoining rooms.
The installation method matters just as much as the heating system itself.
