N173US in storage in the Mojave dessert after leaving the US Air fleet. She sat inactive for over five years before being flown across the Atlantic to Marshall’s of Cambridge (UK) for maintenance. Emerging in her smart new World Airlines livery in July 1996 as G-OWLD.

Sistership N172US was stored next to her in the dry heat of the Californian dessert. Although departing the US months earlier and making the same long journey to become G-WLCY. Scheduled services to Amsterdam began on 13th May 1996 from London City.

World Airlines ceased passenger services in October 1996. One aircraft was publicly impounded and blocked by an airport vehicle at London City Airport and the other impounded at Cambridge Airport. The airline went into liquidation and was sold to foreign investors in November 1996. World Airlines never flew again.

Along with G-WLCY, this photo shows G-OWLD the second of the airlines BAE 146-200, delivered on 16th July 1996. These were both Ex PSA Airlines aircraft manufactured in 1985 and leased from USair. After a lengthy period of storage in Mojave dessert they were both serviced by Marshall's of Cambridge UK (full C check) G-WLCY entered service on 13th May 1996. World Airlines operated under Flightlines (Southend UK) AOC however was planning to gain its own operating licence.

Founded by an automobile leasing magnet in 1995.

In August of that year Air UK set up in direct competition with a World Airlines on the LCY to AMS route.

Photo top right, a very rare shot of both aircraft in the fleet together at London City. G-WLCY about to depart with its crew to Düsseldorf on a contract for Deutsch BA with G-OWLD taking over the four times daily schedule to Amsterdam after being delivered to the airline a few days earlier.

World Airlines operated a single scheduled service in the summer of 1996 to Amsterdam from London City Airport LCY, 44,weekly flights were offered. Proposed services to Copenhagen and Edinburgh never materialised and the second aircraft became available to lease.
