This is where Decisions get serious!

‘S4’ status code is typically used when information reaches a formal stage approval gateway.

By this point, the information has usually gone through significant internal review, coordination and validation. It is no longer simply being developed or discussed, but it is progressing through a formal approval process linked to a specific project stage.

This is where commercial, technical and operational decisions may be made based on that approved information!

The BIM Status where decisions are made!

‘S3’ is used when information is shared specifically for review & comment.

At this stage, teams may still be evaluating options, reviewing risks and gathering feedback before progressing further. The information is not yet approved, but it is ready for meaningful discussion.

In my experience, some of the best project conversations happen during this stage because teams still have the opportunity to challenge assumptions, identify risks and improve outcomes before decisions are locked in.

S2 doesn’t mean Approved in BIM!

S2 information is generally suitable for reference, planning and broader project awareness. It can help teams understand sequencing and project context, but it does not automatically represent formal approval or authorization for construction.

S1: The moment BIM becomes Collaborative

S1 signals that information is suitable for coordination, allowing architects, engineers, contractors and other disciplines to begin relying on each other’s work. While the design may still evolve, S1 means that the information has reached a level of maturity appropriate for multidisciplinary coordination.

Understanding S1 helps teams reduce assumptions, improve collaboration and make coordination far more effective across a project.

Why ‘S0’ causes so much Project Confusion?

‘S0’ status means the information is still being developed internally and is not yet intended for wider project coordination. When unfinished information starts circulating too early, misunderstandings, incorrect assumptions and coordination issues can quickly follow.

Understanding information status is fundamental to effective BIM and ISO 19650 information management.

What makes a Project truly Successful?

The strongest projects I’ve worked on weren’t defined by software, model size or technology.

They were the projects where people trusted the information they were using to make decisions!

Why Revision Control is critical in BIM?

Revision codes do far more than track versions, as they create traceability, helping teams understand what changed, when it changed, and which revision formed the basis of decisions at that point in time.

That visibility becomes essential as projects grow in complexity.

People sometimes confuse ‘Status’ and ‘Revisions’ codes, but they communicate completely different things.

- Status explains the suitability of information
- Revision explains change over time

S0, S1, S2… What they actually mean?

Depending on the project, country, client requirements or national guidance, the exact implementation of ‘Status’ codes can vary slightly, but is typically as following (based on ISO 19650):
S0 Initial (Work in progress)
S1 Suitable for coordination
S2 Suitable for information
S3 Suitable for review & comment
S4 Suitable for stage approval
S6 Suitable for PIM authorization
S7 Suitable for AIM authorization
A1, A2 etc. Authorized & accepted
B1, B2 etc. Partial sign-off with comments
CR As-constructed record document

The overall logic remains very consistent, as in short, status codes help teams understand how information is intended to be used at the specific point in time of a project!

This is Why BIM Teams Stop trusting each other!

I’ve seen teams coordinate using information that was still under development.

I’ve also seen contractors assume information was approved simply because it appeared in a Shared area of the Common Data Environment.

This is exactly why information status and workflow matter so much within ISO 19650.
