Ever wonder why platform prices keep creeping up — even when the job itself hasn’t changed?

While building a new platform for trades, I stumbled across something most people don’t realise:

Since Jan 2024, UK platforms — even small or smart ones — are being treated as “principals” by HMRC.
That means if a job is booked through a platform, VAT is charged on the entire amount, not just the platform fee — even if the tradesperson themselves isn’t VAT registered.

✔️ Labour
✔️ Materials
✔️ Platform fee
🔁 All taxed at 20%

So if you’ve noticed prices going up on service apps this year — this might be why.

Platforms that use automation, AI, or do the matchmaking get pulled into this rule — which means smart tech = higher price tag for the customer.

Should platforms be taxed this way?
Is it fair to add VAT when the person doing the work wouldn’t normally charge it?
