🔬 Giving children their first-hand experience of STEM with ONYVA and TARA Child Protection & Empowerment India

In 2024, we partnered with ONYVA to support the TARA Outreach Centre in India, which helps children from disadvantaged backgrounds access a better education. Through Science and Me, we helped set up a science lab at the centre, trained teachers and delivered a STEM programme for 50 students, many of whom were experiencing science for themselves for the first time.

By sparking curiosity and opening up engaging STEM learning, we are helping inspire the next generation of scientists and problem-solvers.

Safe foundations start with the choices we make every day 🦺 That was the focus of this year's .

Thinking about the potential impact of our everyday actions and decisions is essential to putting safety first at JM. By doing everything we can to build safe foundations, we’re more likely to achieve the right outcomes, so everyone can return home safely to their loved ones.

To bring this to life, workshops at our sites around the world explored a fictional disaster through a film made with JM colleagues. It shows how unintended consequences can combine and lead to an incident when safety is not considered. Facilitated discussions explored the contributing factors and what could be done differently to ensure the safety of others at all times - not just on the shop floor, but also in decisions made across every function.

🏆 Huge congratulations to Maciah Smith, winner of the Rising Star in STEM award at this year’s Black British Business Awards!

Maciah has made big waves since joining us in 2019 and is a true reflection of the science-led, inclusive culture we’re proud to build at JM. Her career in strategy and innovation helps us turn emerging technologies and customer needs into future growth opportunities. She has also played an active role in our inclusion initiatives, from leading our Black Employee Network to championing STEM outreach and opening up access to science for young people from underrepresented backgrounds.

It was a joy to celebrate with the team on Friday night and hear Maciah’s speech in person. We’re so proud of you Maciah and this win is incredibly well deserved! 🎉

🌍 Beyond the vehicles we often associate with hydrogen, the technology is already hard at work across a range of applications, many of which you won't expect…

This Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day, we're highlighting two technologies helping to decarbonise some of our most important industries. Electrolysers use electricity to split water into hydrogen, supporting lower-carbon oil refining, fertiliser production, steelmaking and maritime transport. Fuel cells convert hydrogen into electricity, powering heavy-duty trucks, data centres, forklifts and rail.

At the heart of many electrolysers and fuel cells are catalyst coated membranes (CCMs), manufactured by JM to help them operate efficiently, reliably and at scale.

🧪 Opening doors to careers in chemistry with the Royal Society of Chemistry

Since 2023, we have partnered with the RSC to support Broadening Horizons in the Chemical Sciences, a programme helping Black and ethnic minority undergraduate and postgraduate students across the UK pursue careers in chemistry. Funded by our Science and Me initiative, we have so far offered 30 industry placements, hosted five JM site visits and connected participants with 17 JM colleagues who provide ongoing mentorship.

As one participant shared: "This programme hasn't just given me a seat at tables I didn't know existed, it's shown me the scale of opportunities in chemistry, the direction to reach them, and the belief that I can."

PGM sceptics, this one's for you 👀

Platinum group metals (PGMs) are often written off as too rare to rely on, but as Marge Ryan explains, geological abundance, availability and sustainability are three very different things.

PGMs are scarce in the Earth's crust, yet they're concentrated in large, mineable deposits. Around half of the PGMs used in new products also come from recycling, largely outside South Africa, through mature supply chains that span the globe. As automotive demand gradually declines, even more metal will become available for new technologies such as clean hydrogen.

Inclusion is built by people showing up for each other, and this month we saw plenty of it across JM 🤝

Our Race and Ethnicity Inclusion event brought colleagues together to learn, connect and reflect on how we keep building an inclusive workplace. Isabella Mascarenhas and Calbert Bradford shared a journey through global ethnic minority contributions across the centuries, reminding us how much history is still to be told.

Our employee networks, including the Asian Network, Black Employee Network and HOLA, then took the conversation to their local teams, supported by our diversity, inclusion and belonging ambassadors.

♻️ JM's new refinery: Redefining how we recycle the metals the world relies on.

Almost 60% of the PGMs used in new products are recycled metal, and with new uses emerging in energy, healthcare and digital technology, that figure is set to grow.

Our new refinery in Royston, UK is designed to meet that demand. Built with our people's safety first, it will give us the flexibility to recycle a wider range of materials for our customers, while cutting hazardous waste by 30% and greenhouse gas emissions by a third compared with the refinery it replaces.

A warm welcome to our 2026 graduate programme intake 🎓

This month, nine new graduates joined JM, with eight starting our LEAD Programme and one starting our Engineering Scheme. They bring fresh perspectives and new skills, and over the coming years each will rotate through roles across the business, taking on real challenges and building the experience that will shape their careers.

From business and product development to operations and applications, there's plenty of opportunity ahead, and we can't wait to see what they achieve 🌟

Five years of inspiring the next generation of scientists 🔬

In 2021, we launched Science and Me to improve access to quality STEM education and opportunities for young people. Since then, we've worked with partners, schools and non-profits in six countries, supporting more than 47,000 young people and beneficiaries to discover the power of science.

Along the way, we've awarded nearly £700,000 through 53 grants to 35 organisations, with over 500 JM volunteers sharing their time and expertise.
