Come behind the scenes at our most exciting industry-academia event of the year - the Johnson Matthey Academic Conference (JMAC) 🎬

Last week, 150 attendees joined us for our annual forum connecting PhD researchers, academic supervisors and JM delegates - and James Cookson took us along for a day, catching up with students, colleagues and guests to hear about what makes JMAC so special.

From cutting-edge research presentations by our PhD students to the conversations that spark new ideas, these are just some of the things we look forward to most at JMAC. Most importantly, it reinforces why academia and industry coming together is essential to tackling the challenges that matter.

A huge thank you to all the students, supervisors and JM colleagues who made this year's event one to remember 👏

🏭 Celebrating 100 years of world-class PGM refining at JM Brimsdown

Today, we welcomed customers, UK, European and government partners to our Brimsdown site to celebrate a unique milestone - a century of innovation at one of the world's most advanced platinum group metal (PGM) refineries.

It was a proud moment to reflect on how Brimsdown has shaped the PGM ecosystem, from pioneering industrial refining to leading the shift towards circularity - now processing around 15% of global PGM supply and accounting for around 20% of global PGM recycling. A fitting fact for 🌍

As the UK strengthens its strategic role in the global PGM landscape, Brimsdown's exceptional capabilities in processing, refining and recycling will continue to enable the technologies driving emissions reduction, energy transformation and the digital transition.

"Quality isn't about policing. It's really about support. Not catching problems at the very end, but designing systems that prevent them in the first place." 🏆

We’re proud to celebrate our Quality Assurance & Systems Engineer, Sainyam Arora, recently named 2026 Rookie of the Year by Quality Magazine - an honour awarded to one engineer each year in recognition of their exceptional contributions to the quality profession.

Sam joined JM as a Process Quality Engineer and has grown into a recognised technical voice in the field - a journey we’ve loved being part of. It’s wonderful to see young talent at JM being supported to grow as they continue to make an impact in both our business and across industry 👏

Cars, vans, trucks, off-road machinery 🚗 🚐 🚛 there's a lot of talk about technology neutrality right now. But what does it mean, and why does it matter?

John Goodwin, our Regulatory Affairs Director, explains why backing a single solution too early risks slowing the energy transition.

We believe technology-neutral, outcome-based regulation is best because decarbonisation and the journey towards cleaner air will not look the same across varying sectors, geographies and infrastructure. Multiple technologies need the space to compete.

👇 Where do you see the biggest opportunity for technology neutrality to unlock faster progress?

Platinum group metals (PGMs) 🤝 global food production - what's the connection?

More than half of food produced globally relies on mineral fertilisers and nitric acid is a vital ingredient, which is predominantly produced using platinum-rhodium gauze catalysts.

And it's not just the chemistry that's clever - PGMs make this process circular and sustainable. Swipe through to find out how.

You might have heard about our collaboration with Sibanye-Stillwater and Valterra Platinum - but what makes platinum group metals (PGMs) so critical to our future?

PGMs are the invisible enablers tackling our biggest challenges: energy security, the clean energy transition, aging populations, evolving transport and the digital revolution.
Where do they come from? What makes them uniquely positioned for the future? The full version of our latest video tells all 👇

Marking International Women’s Day with a decade of progress ♀️

Ahead of on the 8th March, we’re reflecting on key moments from JM’s gender equality journey over the past decade.

Many of the milestones in our timeline have been driven by our Gender Equality Network (GEN) employee resource group - colleagues of all genders championing equality and helping create an environment where everyone can thrive.

Thank you to for continuing to drive progress and helping build a more inclusive future.

Today is - and this year, we let the next generation do the talking.

We asked children of to show us what engineering means to them through art. Their creations captured exactly what drives our engineers every day - problem-solving, safety, innovation and more!

Thank you to engineers everywhere - including our own at JM - for the work you do every day 💚

Proving a new pathway to full circularity in hydrogen technologies ♻️

We've collaborated with Syensqo to successfully recover and reuse both the platinum group metals (PGMs) and ionomer from fuel cell and electrolyser components to make new catalyst coated membranes (CCMs), with high yields and performance equivalent to fresh material.

The best part? The process reduces the carbon footprint by up to 80% compared to conventional routes.

Recycling both these valuable groups of materials is becoming increasingly important to scaling clean hydrogen production and decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors like heavy transport and industry.

Cross-company collaboration across the hydrogen supply chain is key for scaling circularity, and we're proud to be paving the way. However, technology alone isn't enough - clearer regulatory frameworks, end-of-life infrastructure and industry-wide product stewardship are needed to take us even further.

Scrolling through this post right now? It’s likely that you're holding a platinum group metal (PGM) in your hand.

From the iridium that helps enable your mobile signal to the palladium powering your Bluetooth connection, PGMs are essential to the technology we rely on every day.
They're in the chips, the screen, the circuits - quietly enabling the way we connect, work and live.
