Renewables are still growing fast globally but the story is getting more complicated!

The IEA says global renewable capacity is expected to more than double by 2030, driven strongly by solar. It also says that by 2026, renewable generation in the EU will be higher than combined non- renewable generation.

But at the same time, Reuters reports some major energy companies are scaling back parts of their renewables ambitions, showing that growth is not always smooth or straightforward.

Renewables are still moving forward but building a cleaner energy system is still messy, uneven, and heavily shaped by investment decisions.

AI is not just a tech story anymore! Instead it’s becoming an energy story too!

Gartner says global data centre power demand is expected to jump from 104GW in 2025 to 132GW in 2026, with much of that growth linked to AI. The EIA also says electricity use from AI-focused data centres surged 50% in 2025.

What does that actually mean though?
Basically, the more AI grows, the more pressure it puts on power systems, grid planning and generation.

So the question is….can our energy infrastructure keep up with smarter machines?

Why does your home use more electricity than it did 10 years ago??

Because life at home has changed more than some people realise!

Ten years ago, most households were not juggling the same mix of devices, streaming, smart tech, and new electric appliances that many now use every day. Ofcom has said a typical UK household uses an average of 18 devices to stay connected and entertained, and estimated that powering those devices and broadband makes up around 30% of the average UK electricity bill.

Then add in how homes are changing more broadly, more people are charging EVs at home, more households are moving towards heat pumps, and Ofgem says electricity demand is expected to rise by 50% by 2035, with increasing uptake of both EVs and heat pumps playing a big part. Energy Network Association also says an EV charger is likely to be the largest single electricity draw in many homes.

It’s not just that people are using more, it is that modern life is becoming more digital, more electric, and more dependent on power in the background.

As electricity demand continues to grow and the UK invests in a cleaner, more connected energy system, transformer technology is becoming more important than ever.

We don’t think so! Not without big changes still anyway. It’s not that EVs are the problem, it’s the fact the systems behind them need to catch up.

National grid says the idea that ‘the grid can’t cope with EVs’ is a myth but it also says charging needs to be smart, coordinated, and supported by the right infrastructure….thats the bit people tend to miss.

Because it’s not just about millions of cars plugging in, it’s about when they charge, where they charge, and whether local networks are ready for that extra demand. Energy Networks Association says EVs and heat pumps can require checks or upgrades because local networks have to make sure they can handle the extra load.

So really the question is are we upgrading fast enough for how people are actually going to use electricity?

When people think about rising electrify demand they often picture factories or big infrastructure projects….

But a lot of the growth is coming from things that are becoming part of everyday life….often without people even thinking about it.

AI, streaming, EVs, heat pumps, data centres, on their own they might not seem much but together they are changing how much electricity we need, when we need it, and how the grid has to respond.

That does not mean these things are bad, it just means modern life is becoming more electric, more connected, and more dependent on reliable infrastructure behind the scenes.

So when people hear talk about grid upgrades, energy investment, or network pressure, this is part of the reason why.

As renewable generation continues to scale, one challenge is increasingly clear, it is not just about how much energy we produce, but also about when we can use it.

Wind and solar don’t follow demand, they follow the weather, and that creates periods of surplus, and periods where the system is under pressure. Short duration storage helps smooth the gaps but it doesn’t solve the bigger problem.

This is where long-duration storage becomes critical, it allows energy to be stored across longer timeframes, deployed during sustained low-generation periods, and used to support system stability at scale. Without it, the system risks increased curtailment, higher reliance on backup generation, and reduced efficiency across the network. As the UK grid evolves, long-duration storage is becoming a core part of how a flexible, resilient system operates.

Ofgem has confirmed that the energy price cap is rising by 13% from 1 July to 30 September 2026 for a typical household on a standard variable tariff paying by Direct Debit.

So what does that actually mean at home?

It means that for a lot of households, bills could feel tighter again over summer, even if you are not using as much heating. That is because the price cap is not a cap on your total bill, it limits the unit rate and standing charge, but the more energy you use, the more you still pay.

It also means this is not just about your supplier randomly putting prices up. Ofgem says the cap is built from a mix of costs including wholesale energy prices, network costs, policy costs, supplier operating costs and VAT.

And the reason for this latest rise? Ofgem says it is mainly down to higher wholesale gas prices, linked to ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The real takeaway for households:
Your bill is shaped by a much bigger energy system than most people realise. So when people talk about energy policy, grid investment or energy security, it is not just industry talk in the background. It shows up in real life, in real homes, on real bills.

Why are more homes needing grid upgrades?

Because the way we live at home is changing!

Years ago, most houses were not designed for today’s level of electricity demand. Now more households are adding EV chargers, switching to heat pumps, and relying on more electric tech day to day. UK network operators say homes may need checks or upgrades before low-carbon tech like EV chargers and heat pumps can be installed, because local electricity supplies were often built for much lower usage.

It is not about people “using electricity wrongly’’, it is about homes being asked to do more than they used to.

Charging a car, heating a home differently, running more devices, and shifting away from gas all place extra demand on local networks. National Grid’s distribution business says growing electricity use for transport, heating and buildings means networks need to expand, while EV chargers and heat pumps are becoming a much bigger part of the system.

So when people hear grid upgrades, it is not just big infrastructure in the distance, it is also about making sure everyday homes are ready for how modern life is changing.

Because your bill is not just about how much electricity you used!

It is also shaped by the cost of buying energy on wholesale markets, running and upgrading the networks that move it, balancing the system when supply and demand shift, and dealing with demand spikes when lots of people need power at the same time. Ofgem says wholesale and network costs remain the biggest parts of consumer bills, with system management costs sitting on top of that too.

The frustrating bit? Even when wholesale prices ease, that does not always mean bills suddenly feel cheap, because infrastructure, balancing, and other non-commodity costs still exist in the background. Ofgem’s recent price-cap methodology also notes that bills include wholesale, network, policy and operating costs, not just the energy itself.

So put simply…..your energy bill reflects a whole energy system not just a meter reading!
