Know your Boiler: Boiler Flue

A boiler flue is a pipe attached to the boiler allowing waste gases to safely leave the building. Have you seen black or white ducts sticking out of buildings, expelling gas? Those are flues!
The gases released by the flue, including carbon monoxide, are harmful and that is why the boiler flue regulations are getting stricter.

When installing a new boiler, the flue has to be positioned a certain distance from any parts of the home that can be opened up such as windows and doors. This depends on your boiler size but is typically between 30-60 cm above, below or to the side of any opening. It should be positioned away from any plastic gutters as well.

For any information or advice on your heating system, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Check Your System Pressure

While it doesn’t necessarily damage your heating system, low boiler pressure can cause your radiators to not warm up efficiently, leading to inefficient heating and higher bills.

The most common reason for your gas boiler pressure being too low is either a water leak somewhere in the system or reduced system pressure as a result of bleeding a radiator.

This check is quick to carry out. Just locate the gauge on the front of your boiler. The indicator should normally be between 1.0 and 2.0 bar (often highlighted green) but check the recommended pressure in the manufacturer’s instructions. If the gauge is below 1.0 bar (often coloured red) then the pressure needs increasing.

If your boiler instructions say so, you can do this yourself by using the boiler’s filling loop, follow the manuals instructions. If you’re unsure, contact your boiler manufacturer’s technical department or a qualified heating engineer.

After this, you should find your radiators start heating up quicker. If you find, however, that the pressure drops immediately, or in a short space of time, it most likely means there’s a leak. In this case you should contact a qualified heating engineer.

Top Tips to prevent frozen and burst pipes this winter-

☑️Insulate water tanks and lag pipes.
☑️Fix dripping taps – the smallest leak could cause a frozen pipe.
☑️Get your boiler serviced!
☑️Minimise draughts! Keep doors and windows closed.
☑️Leave the heating on low (around 12°C) when away and get a neighbour to check your home regularly.
☑️Locate the internal stopcock and learn how to turn it off. Most stopcocks can be found under the kitchen sink and can be turned off by rotating clockwise.
☑️If your property is going to be vacant for some time or if you are going on a holiday, consider turning off the water supply at the stopcock and drain the system so that there is no water in the pipes.

What YOU can do if you get frozen pipes
☑️Turn off water supply at stopcock.
☑️Check if the pipe has burst.
☑️Thaw pipe with hot water bottle or a towel soaked in hot water, begin at the end that is nearest to the tap.
☑️You could also use a hair-dryer at its lowest setting and definitely NOT a naked flame.
☑️If you have any doubts at all, call a professional.

Boiler Tips for Winter

Sudden cold temperatures could freeze your boiler’s external condensate pipe, which could cause your boiler to stop working. Try insulating pipes, or keep the heating on low constantly when the temperatures drop.

If your home or property isn’t getting as warm as it should be, there could be air trapped inside the heating system. To release this trapped air you will require a key which can slot into the radiators bleed valve. If you still have a problem after doing this, call in the professionals.

Get your boiler serviced and keep it well maintained. Check for any warning signs such as leaks, cracks or noises; the sooner you can identify a problem, the easier it will be to fix.

If you are going have an unoccupied property for longer than 30 days then it’s worth draining the water system and switching the utilities off. However, in the winter months, keeping your central heating system on at a minimum temperature could help prevent frozen pipes.
