Imperial SEG Student Chapter

Imperial SEG Student Chapter This page represents the Imperial College Society of Economic Geologists student chapter; based out of the Royal School of Mines (RSM) in South Kensington.

The chapter was established in 2004 to encourage an increasing awareness of geology in its application to minerals exploration and mining. It serves as a platform to connect like-minded individuals from both academia and industry who are interested in the sector. We aim to further the study of economic geology at Imperial College through organising field courses, guest lectures and employment based seminars.

Imperial SEG Chapter will be holding its annual mining symposium for students this Wednesday 7th March in room 1.51 in the Royal School of Mines. The event will begin with registration at 12:30 and finish with a networking reception at 5:30. We are delighted to welcome ten speakers to give a range of talks regarding the different career paths mining may entail.

Beowulf Mining - Kurt Budge (Nordic Exploration & Mining)
Hannam & Partners - Alex Allen (Mining Finance)
Satarla - Sarah Gordon (Risk Management)
SRK - Fiona Cessford (Environmental & Social Consulting)
Rio Tinto - Sandy Walker (Exploration)
Imperial College – Kathryn Hadler (Mineral Processing Consulting & Academia)
First Quantum Minerals – Tom Wesby (Exploration)
Terrabotics - Gareth Morgan (Geospatial)
Hatch - Calliope Lalousis (Consulting)
Mineco – Dominic Roberts (ex-British Army & Balkans Base Metal Mining)

The event is relatively informal, so students may attend for selected talks. I would highly encourage students pursuing a career in any of the related specialisms to attend. It also provides an opportunity to explore non-traditional career paths an Earth Science degree may entail.

For registration, please email [email protected]. If any student is interested in being on the SEG committee in future, please contact us as we are seeking volunteers for this event.

SEG International Exchange and Honorary Lecturer Chusi Li will be giving a lecture for students in RSM G41 on Monday 16th October at 5PM.

Chusi's research teaching and consultancy to the mineral industry have mainly focused on the geology, genesis and exploration of magmatic sulphide deposits worldwide. He is widely considered the world's leading expert in magmatic sulphide deposits, as well as a specialist in mafic-ultramafic petrology. He has supervised and co-supervised 30 graduate students and visiting scholars, co-edited two books and co-authored more than 140 refereed papers published in top-tier international geological journals. Chusi is based at the University of Indiana.

Chusi will be providing two talks titled:

1) Magmatic sulphide deposits: China versus the world.
2) Use and misuse of magma series and trace element discrimination diagrams for mafic-ultramafic rocks.

As usual, we will be providing drinks and snacks at this event. Please drop us an email if you are interested in attending to give us an idea of numbers.

Cheers,

Imperial SEG
