Profile boards: set them once, trust them all job.

Profile boards (sight rails) hold your lines and levels long after the pegs have gone. But if they're flimsy, too close to the dig or not checked, they can move without anyone noticing.

Getting profiles right on Greater Manchester jobs:

• Set them well back from the excavation so they don't get knocked
• Brace the posts properly so the boards can't twist or sag
• Mark each board clearly: which line, what offset, what it's for
• Check the lines between boards against your control before footings go in

Stockport to Bolton, Salford to Oldham, a solid set of profiles saves a lot of re-marking later.

Do you still use profile boards on your jobs, or have you gone over to pegs and paint?

Steel booked in? Get the holding-down bolts checked before it turns up.

We check steel frame setting out across Manchester and Greater Manchester, so you know the grid, bolts and pads are right before the crane's on site.

• Grid lines checked against the drawings
• Holding-down bolt positions
• Pad and base plate levels

From Stockport to Bury, Salford to Oldham.

Message the page with the site address and drawings, and we'll sort a time to get out to you.

Where's your TBM, and is it still safe?

Every level on site hangs off your temporary benchmark. If it gets knocked, buried or driven over, every slab, footing and drainage level you take from it after that is out too.

Looking after your TBM on Greater Manchester jobs:

• Set it somewhere solid and out of the way of plant and deliveries
• Mark it clearly and fence or protect it if you can
• Set a second TBM so you can check one against the other
• Check it hasn't moved before any important levels go in

Wigan to Rochdale, Trafford to Tameside, a protected benchmark saves a lot of digging out later.

Where do you usually set your TBM: a kerb, a manhole, a steel pin, or something else?

Working next to an existing building, digging a basement or opening up a deep excavation?

We do movement monitoring surveys across Manchester and Greater Manchester. Regular readings on structures, walls and excavations, so you know if anything's moving while the work goes on.

• Party walls and neighbouring buildings
• Retaining walls and excavations
• Basements and deep digs

From Stockport to Bury, Salford to Oldham.

Message the page with the site address and what you need monitoring, and we'll talk it through.

When did your level last pass a two-peg test?

A level that's out of adjustment doesn't just get one reading wrong. It gets every reading wrong, and the error grows the further you sight. On a long drainage run or a big slab, that soon adds up.

A quick check that saves a lot of grief on Greater Manchester jobs:

• Set two pegs roughly 30 to 60 metres apart on fairly flat ground
• Take readings with the level set up exactly halfway between them
• Move close to one peg and take both readings again
• If the height differences don't agree within tolerance, get it adjusted or serviced before you use it

Stockport to Salford, Oldham to Bolton, ten minutes with two pegs beats digging out a slab that's been laid to the wrong level.

How often do you two-peg your level: weekly, monthly, or only when it's been knocked?

Need setting out done over the weekend in Greater Manchester?

Plenty of jobs lose a day waiting for an engineer. We can get out on a Saturday or Sunday so your grids, pegs and levels are ready when the gang turns up on Monday.

• Extensions and new builds
• Groundworks, drainage runs and footings
• Steel frame grids and holding-down bolts

From Oldham to Wigan and Altrincham to Bolton.

Message the page with the site address, drawings and the weekend you're after, and we'll tell you straight if we can cover it.

Offset pegs: keep them out of the dig.

Set your offsets too close and the first bucket of the digger takes them out. Then someone's guessing where the footing line was.

A few habits that help on Greater Manchester jobs:

• Set offsets far enough back to survive the dig and the spoil heap
• Use a consistent offset and write it on the peg
• Check them back to your control before the digger starts
• Re-check after plant has been working near them

Trafford to Tameside, Wigan to Bury, a minute spent placing offsets properly saves re-setting the whole line.

How far back do you usually set your offset pegs: half a metre, a metre, or more?

Don't set out from the fence line.

It's one of the most common setting-out mistakes on extensions and small builds. Fences, garden walls and old kerbs look straight, but they lean, wander and rarely sit exactly on the boundary. Set out from them and everything you build inherits the error.

Keep it right on Greater Manchester jobs:

• Work from the control points or boundary marks on the drawing
• Treat fences and existing walls as a rough check, not your reference
• If there's no control, get some established before you start
• Check your pegs back to a second point before anyone digs

Stockport to Bolton, Salford to Oldham, a few minutes on the right reference saves a lot of grief later.

What do you usually set out from on small jobs: control points, the boundary, or the existing house?
