Which sectors qualify for the Climate Change Levy (CCL) exemptions or relief?

While eligibility depends on how energy is used, there are several sectors that often qualify for CCL exemptions or reduced rates:

✅ Manufacturing & energy-intensive sites
Often among the most frequent beneficiaries of CCL relief schemes, especially where energy use links to eligible processes.

✅ Agriculture & horticulture
May qualify where energy is used for specific agricultural or growing activities.

✅ Charities & care providers
Some organisations may qualify through non-business use exemptions or domestic-use treatment.

💡 Choosing the right energy contract for your hospitality business isn’t just about finding the lowest unit rate — it’s about matching your gas & electricity deal to how you actually operate.

Here are the mistakes we see often:

1. Auto-renewing onto out-of-contract rates
Busy teams can miss renewal dates. Your business may lose negotiating time and pay more than you need to.

2. Choosing on price alone
Always check payment rules, pass-through costs, renewal windows and billing quality.

3. Not managing multi-site contracts centrally
When each venue handles energy separately, businesses lose control over renewals. Central review can improve buying power, reporting and renewal management.

4. Ignoring usage data when comparing quotes
Before you request quotes, review meter readings, half-hourly data, seasonal patterns and unusual spikes.

Winter price spikes are coming and the real risk isn’t the market. It’s renewing by default.

Here are 3 costly mistakes to avoid when renewing your business gas contracts.

1. ❌ Missing the contract notice period
If you act late, you may be moved to ‘out-of-contract’ rates (often much higher than those of a contract).

2. ❌ Skipping your annual gas usage review
You might be using more gas than you need.

3. ❌ Renewing without checking wider market conditions
A quick contract review helps you make a renewal decision based on current conditions, not familiarity.

Manufacturers are heading towards the close of 2026 with one big operational pressure still firmly on the agenda: high energy costs.

Many manufacturing sites can unlock real energy savings fast—with little to no capital investment.

Here are a few quick-win energy savings we outline in our latest guide:

✅ Stop compressed air losses
Run regular leak walkarounds, log each leak, assign responsibility and confirm repairs.

✅ Cut non-production idle load
Use a simple shutdown checklist to eliminate avoidable running time.

✅ Optimise schedules & setpoints
Small changes to when equipment runs (and how it’s set) can drive meaningful cost reductions.

✅ Train operators on peak avoidance
Give teams clear guidance on what actions increase costs and how peak demand impacts bills.

💡 And don’t overlook your energy contract
Manufacturers should review things like contract length, fixed vs flexible purchasing, pass-through charges, billing accuracy and renewal timing.
