𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗵𝘆𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝘀: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗲𝘁𝘀

Most of the armoured vehicles that defence forces will rely on over the next decade are already in service. How do we electrify them?

Fully electric powertrains still can’t give heavy platforms the range they need. Converting existing vehicles to full hybrids usually means rebuilding them inside, which can take years and cost about as much as a new fleet.

In the October issue of Aerospace & Defense Technology, our Business Development Manager for Aerospace and Defence, George Potter, makes the case for a quicker route: retrofitting mild hybrid systems. An integrated starter generator mounted on the engine’s crankshaft reduces fuel burn while idling, eases brake wear and heat load, and adds instant torque. It also gives a quieter start at low speed, which matters for covert operations.

George also explains the engineering challenge. Heavy combat vehicles need a starter generator with the power of a traction motor, built so the crankshaft can pass through its centre.

Helix started in motorsport, where every gram and every kilowatt is fought for. Today that same engineering discipline is going into aircraft - and it's the reason a 21.7kg Helix motor can sit at the heart of a 380kW hybrid generator.

Helix will be at AIRTEC 2026, 20-22 October, on a shared stand with our customer Red Aircraft - showcasing the RED A03 Series Hybrid Generator.

The ultra-light generator pairs the RED A03 V12 diesel engine - one of the lightest and most efficient piston engines in aviation history - with the Helix SPX177-137D motor to deliver:

-> Up to 380kW electrical power (5 minutes peak) and 327kW continuous
-> A dry weight of just 350kg - output that typically needs a 2-tonne unit
-> 3x the electrical power density of existing auxiliary power units
-> 50% fuel savings and 50% less CO2 than equivalent turbine engines
-> Just 75 decibels at 50 metres - ideal for eVTOLs, air taxis and airport noise limits
