Another bespoke gate and wall-top railing project completed this week in Dunster, Somerset, replacing an origional timber in version.

The metalwork has been bespoke designed and manufactured to suit the property, then hot-dip galvanised to provide maximum long-term rust protection before being paint finished in Heritage Black for a traditional appearance.

We are proud to share the first images of a sculptural metalwork project installed this week for a private client.

West Country Blacksmiths were commissioned to design and create this bespoke dragon sculpture for a longstanding client. The artwork was designed by blacksmith Dominic Hesp, who led a team over more than six months to produce this remarkable stainless steel dragon, which sits upon a galvanised steel rock with an antique acid-etched finish.

Standing approximately 14 feet tall, the sculpture is made from many thousands of individual components, including more than 2,500 individually hand-crafted stainless steel scales.

Many local people and visitors have watched the artwork evolve through its many stages at our workshop at Allerford Forge in Somerset before its completion and installation at its new home in Devon.

This has been a truly unique and special project. If you’ve enjoyed seeing it, we’d really appreciate it if you could like, share and follow our page. We’ll be sharing many more photographs and videos over the coming days along with other projects were working on.

We are excited to offer a 12-month paid traineeship in Blacksmithing & Metalwork with West Country Blacksmiths, as part of the Exmoor National Park Exmoor Pioneers Trainee Programme.

This is a great opportunity for someone hardworking, reliable and keen to learn practical heritage and metalworking skills while gaining hands-on experience in a busy blacksmithing and metalwork business.

No previous experience is essential — just a positive attitude, good work ethic and willingness to learn.
