The Glimpse. A small building, so nothing gets wasted.

A set of steps up to the bed, with drawers built into the base of them. The whole staircase doubles as storage, and when it's shut it just reads as panelling.

On a footprint this size, every space has to do two jobs. This one does three.

We're hiring.

Two roles going at Elements Build, working on houses, extensions and renovations around Newquay.

Groundworker / machine driver
You've got solid groundworks experience, you're confident on a digger and you can lay a block. Footings, drainage, slabs, blockwork - getting builds out of the ground properly.

Carpenter's mate / labourer
Some site experience and keen to learn. You'll work alongside our carpenters from first fix through to the finished details, and we'll help you build up your skills as you go. A good one if you want to get properly into carpentry.

Both roles:
- Self-employed (CIS)
- Long-term, ongoing work
- Own transport essential
- Based around Newquay

A lovely one from Stuart and Zoe in Holywell.

"As I was living off site for most of the build it was really important I was in regular contact with Tom. He sent updates by WhatsApp and photos of the progress each week. The site was always tidy, and even the neighbours commented on how professional the builders were. The quality of craftsmanship was outstanding - we couldn't be happier."

Meet Ollie.

Ollie started helping me during covid. He came on for some casual hours and has been with me ever since.

He trained as a carpenter and does it to a very high standard. He's since taken on site foreman alongside the carpentry, so he runs the day to day of a project when I'm not there.

He's organised and level headed. Nothing rattles him. He'll work at his own pace and make sure it's right, which on site counts for a lot.

Behind every job is a small team who actually build the thing. Good to put a face to one of them.

Blow the Winds. Two details from the same house.

A slatted timber wall with the TV, the speakers and all the kit set into it, so the screen sits flush and the wires disappear. Getting a recess to line up with the slats takes planning long before anything goes on the wall.

And outside, the car charger fixed straight to the cladding - a modern bit of tech that needed a tidy home rather than being bolted on as an afterthought.

The fittings people notice least are usually the ones that took the most working out.

We just won our first ever award.

The Glimpse picked up a Commendation at the Awards evening last month.

It's a project we're proud of, and one we couldn't have built without , who designed it. A coastal conversion on an exposed headland is a hard thing to get right.

Nice to have the work recognised. Nicer to have built it.

Blow the Winds. The kitchen, up close.

No handles. Just a recessed rail with a strip of light running the full length of it, so the edge reads as a line rather than a fitting.

Worktop and splashback are the same slab, running continuous, which means every socket cut-out had to land exactly where it was drawn. There's no adjusting it afterwards.

Most of the work in a kitchen is in the bits you look straight past.

Blow the Winds. Doors open, and the room just carries on outside.

The floor runs level all the way out. No step, no lip - a channel drain across the threshold takes the water instead. Underfloor heating in the slab, so every millimetre of that build-up had to be worked out before anything was poured.

It's a small thing that takes a lot of getting right. When it's right you don't notice it at all.

Boots by the door. Which is the point of the whole thing, really.

The Glimpse, from the outside.

White boarding, a metal roof, and a flue that sits proud of the ridge. It's a small building on an exposed plot and everything on it has to earn its place.

The steps and the planters were the last thing to go in. Corten, so it can rust and be left alone.

Thirty degrees on a scaffold is no joke. Nobody's pretending otherwise.

But you look up and that's the view. Porth, on a Tuesday, in the middle of a heatwave.
Roof battens on, cladding started. Getting it closed in before the weather turns, which in Cornwall could be Thursday.

There are worse places to be swinging a nail gun. Not many better.
