This is what you don't actually see but every joint weld has to pass a quality control test before the pipe installation can continue.

Once a pipeline is buried, you won’t see the joints but their quality matters. These joints need to last!

Getting an electrofusion joint right takes more than connecting the machine and pressing start. It means properly scraped, clean pipe surfaces, correct alignment, secure clamps and the right welding and cooling times.

Basically, “that’ll do” doesn’t get a look-in! 😉

📸 This photo shows part of our quality control review, with the welding data, joint photos and inspection report checked, and the joint marked acceptable for installation.

Those records help show how the joint was made and give us a traceable history to refer back to. The preparation on site and the checks afterwards all play their part in building a reliable pipeline.

🚧 “Christ, not another road closed in Harrogate!” 😅

We know, we get it… you spot the sign, have a grumble and realise your usual shortcut is off the cards.

But there’s a good reason for this one 👇

The lads have been using horizontal directional drilling (HDD) on this narrow back road to install pipe underground, saving us from digging a trench along the whole route whilst installing a rising main.

The drill rig, support vehicles and team need room to work safely. On a road this tight, that means a temporary closure to protect both the lads and everyone travelling through.

The markings in photo 3 show what the lads do once they've identified any underground services and mark out the planned drilling route. It’s part of the preparation before work starts understanding what’s below the surface and helps us plan, avoid existing pipes and cables.

There’s a process behind the closure too. Planned closures need council authorisation, with notices and signs setting out the restrictions and as you can imagine, these can cause set backs to when the work starts.

If you've been on one of our closures, thanks for bearing with us. A few extra turns for now give the lads the space to get the job done safely. 👍

Sometimes you need the machine… sometimes you need the manpower. 💪

More progress from the lads at Worth Valley, and these photos show pretty well what prep actually goes into getting a new pipeline in the ground.

As handy as the excavator is, it can't do everything! When you're working in amongst existing utilities, there are times when it comes down to a shovel, a bit of graft and good old-fashioned manpower 👊🏼

⚡ A bit of Electrofusion action at Worth Valley…

Steve sent us these shots of the team getting another section of pipeline welded up.

Electrofusion uses fittings with built-in heating elements to create a strong, controlled joint between sections of PE pipe, but as always, the prep is just as important as the weld itself. Clean, controlled and done properly. 👌

Not the flashiest part of a pipeline job… but a pretty important one! 💪
