Spot the fault. 👀

Those bright dots on the solar panels look like failing cells. Most of them are bird muck and lichen.

They sit on the glass, absorb more heat than the panel, and glow like a defect in strong sun.

The tell is the pattern. A genuine fault follows the cell grid — one cell, a block, or a stripe. Soiling lands at random, is smaller than a cell, and shows up just as brightly on the roof tiles either side, where there are no cells at all.

One of those findings is a jet wash. The other is a panel replacement. Worth knowing which you're looking at.

ITC Level 1 certified thermography. Independent, survey only.

Some roofs are more complicated than they look from the ground. 🏠

Multiple elevations, dormers, chimneys and difficult-to-access areas can all make a thorough roof inspection more challenging.

Using drone technology alongside our inspection experience allows us to get a clearer view of areas that might otherwise be difficult to assess—helping build a more complete picture of the roof’s condition.
A different perspective can reveal a lot. 🔍

What do we actually do at Above Ground Surveys?

We provide independent roof and building surveys and inspections for homeowners, property buyers, commercial property owners and businesses across the UK.

From pre-purchase roof surveys and leak detection to building inspections, damage assessments and commercial surveys, we combine practical inspection experience with technology such as drones and thermal imaging where it adds value.
Most importantly, we’re independent. We don’t carry out repairs or sell roofing work, so our job is simply to assess what’s there and report what we find.

Behind the scenes at a football academy in Kent. ⚽️

Our team captured aerial and ground-level footage throughout a live training session, producing 4K video and stills for the academy’s marketing and social media content. All footage was supplied raw, giving their team complete flexibility when editing.

Careful planning allowed us to capture every angle without disrupting the players or coaching team, with the flight path designed around the session from the start.

As a CAA-approved, fully insured and ICO-registered drone company, we provide professional aerial imaging for commercial sites, events and marketing projects across the UK.

If you're a club, academy, business or organisation looking for aerial footage that genuinely looks the part, we'd be glad to talk.

A great evening's work in Kent this week. 🏟️

We were commissioned by a well-known football academy to capture marketing and social media footage across one of their training sessions — aerial and ground-level video and stills, shot in full 4K and delivered raw for their team to edit as they wish.

Working around a live session takes a bit of planning. The footage needs to look the part, but it can't get in the way of the coaching, and the flight plan has to be built around that from the outset.

We're a CAA-approved drone survey and aerial imaging company, fully insured and ICO registered for data protection, working across a wide range of projects — from commercial and industrial sites through to marketing and event footage like this.

If you're a club, academy, business or organisation looking for aerial footage that genuinely looks the part, we'd be glad to talk.

Why choose a drone survey for your commercial property? 🏢

Drones allow large roof areas to be inspected quickly and safely, with minimal disruption to day-to-day business operations and no need for costly access equipment.

They also provide detailed visual records, optional thermal imaging to help identify hidden moisture, and consistent data for tracking changes in the property’s condition over time.
A safer, faster and more efficient way to understand your commercial property.

A historic landmark preparing for its next chapter. 🏛️

We recently completed a full drone roof survey of St John’s Seminary in Wonersh, covering every roof area, including the chapel.

Built in the late 19th century, this Grade II-listed building is known for its striking red-brick architecture, slate roofs and distinctive copper spirelet.

With plans approved to transform the former seminary into new homes, our survey will help the redevelopment team understand the roof’s condition and plan the work ahead while preserving its historic character.

We’re proud to support the future of this remarkable Surrey landmark.

Preserving the past starts with understanding its condition. 🏛️

Our team recently completed a comprehensive drone roof survey at St John’s Seminary in Wonersh, inspecting every roof area across the historic Surrey site, including its chapel.

Founded in 1889, the former seminary was designed by ecclesiastical architect Frederick Walters and officially opened in 1891, followed by the chapel in 1896. Its red-brick Dutch/Jacobean architecture, slate roofs and distinctive copper spirelet have helped make it a Grade II-listed landmark.

For more than a century, St John’s trained Catholic priests for the Diocese of Southwark before closing in 2021. The building also appeared as a filming location in ITV’s Foyle’s War.

With plans now approved to transform the site into new homes, our detailed roof condition survey will help inform the redevelopment team as they prepare this remarkable building for its next chapter.

We’re proud to provide the clear, accurate information needed to support the careful restoration and reuse of one of Surrey’s most recognisable historic buildings.

Drone Survey Spotlight: St John's Seminary, Wonersh 🏛️

We recently carried out a full drone roof survey of one of Surrey's most striking historic buildings—St John's Seminary in Wonersh, near Guildford—covering every roof area of the site, including the chapel.

St John's was founded in 1889 by Bishop John Butt, who purchased the 60-acre site to establish a seminary for training Catholic priests for the Diocese of Southwark. While the permanent buildings were under construction, the seminary opened temporarily in Henfield, Sussex—with its first rector, Francis Bourne, who went on to become Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster. The main buildings were officially completed and opened on 8 September 1891, with the chapel following in 1896.

Designed by the prolific ecclesiastical architect Frederick Walters in the striking Dutch/Jacobean style, the building is constructed largely in red brick with gauged and ribbed brick dressings, stone detailing, and slate roofs — topped with a distinctive copper spirelet over a domed lantern on the roof ridge. It's been Grade II listed since 1986, recognised for its architectural and historic interest.

St John's trained Catholic priests for well over a century before closing in 2021, and even had a moment of screen fame as a filming location for the ITV series Foyle's War. It's now set for an exciting new chapter, with planning permission in place to convert the building into residential apartments and houses.

We were proud to support this project with a full roof condition survey, helping the team behind the redevelopment understand exactly what they're working with before bringing this iconic building back to life.
