The heat waves are over, the seasons are changing and now is the perfect time to assess what hi-vis garments you and your team are wearing.

But do you really know what the class ratings mean?

What is EN Iso 20471?

EN ISO 20471 is the international standard that specifies requirements for high visibility garments including everyday work vests, jackets, trousers, t-shirts and coveralls.

EN ISO 20471 has three classes which provide different complicity in daylight and darkness. The three classes are determined by the amount of fluorescent material used and the volume of reflective tape incorporated into the garment.

🦺 Class 1
The minimum level of protection required in mostly private risk areas. To meet this class the garment must have a minimum of 0.14m² of fluorescent material and must incorporate 0.10m² of retro-reflective material which is equal to 2m of 5cm wide tape.

Who should wear class 1?

Warehouse operatives
Office workers
Event organisers
Indoor logistics staff

🦺 Class 2
Intermediate level of protection required for higher risk areas and basic roadside working. To meet class 2 garments must have a minimum of 0.50m² of fluorescent material and must incorporate 0.13m² of retro-reflective material which is equal to 2.60m of 5cm wide tape.

Who should wear class 2?

Construction workers
Delivery drivers
Parking wardens
Security stewards

🦺 Class 3
The highest level of protection required in safety risk areas including airports and major roads. To meet this class the garment must have a minimum of 0.80m² of fluorescent material and must incorporate 0.20m² of retro-reflective material which is equal to 4m of 5cm wide tape.

Who should wear class 3?

Highway maintenance
Rail workers
Traffic management
Airport operatives

Does colour determine the EN ISO 20471 class?

Although colour does not directly determine the EN ISO 20471 class, the primary fluorescent colours are yellow and orange. If your workplace needs to visually separate workers through coloured garments you should choose colours which have a high visual contrast against your working environment. For example:

If you work in urban construction, we recommend yellow to contrast against the greys and blacks of concrete and metal.

If you work in an office environment, we recommend bold colours such as red or blue to contrast the neutral greys, beige and white of desks and décor.

If you work in rural areas, we recommend orange to contrast against green vegetation and dark brown earthworks.

It is also important to note that some industries have their own requirements and ratings which are only met by specific colours; for example if you work in rail industries your high visibility garments must meet RIS 3279 TOM, this standard can only be met by orange.

So what garments should I wear?

We supply thousands of high visibility garments and accessories from big brands such as Regatta, Portwest, Supertouch, Leo, ProRTX, Bee Swift and Yoko.

The options are endless and can appear confusing; our expert team can help you choose the right products for your safety needs, simply call 0114 243 3755 or email [email protected].

In the UK, one person every 90 seconds is admitted to an emergency department for acquired brain injury.

If you work at risk of falling debris, low overhead clearances, electrical risks or are working at height, your employer must provide suitable head protection.

Wearing a safety helmet could be the difference between going home safe and becoming a statistic.

Shockingly 94% of safety helmets tested by the British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) from non-registered suppliers failed basic safety and performance criteria.

As a registered BSIF supplier, we guarantee that all our safety helmets are certified against EN397 which is the UK standard for industrial safety helmets, protecting against vertical impact and pe*******on.

If you are working with electrical equipment we supply safety helmets certified against EN50365 which insulate from voltages up to 1000V AC or 1500V DC.

If you are working at height we supply safety helmets rated against EN12492 which offer wider multi-directional impact protection and integrated chinstraps.

With 100's of certified safety helmets available at Arden Winch and our team of trained experts, we are here to put your safety first.

What fans see at the first home match vs what we see. ⚽️

For the fans, it’s the excitement of the first home match, the atmosphere in the stadium and the team taking to the pitch.

For us it’s the success of hard work, planning, branding and delivering over 1500 garments behind the scenes to make match day happen.

From the stewards welcoming fans through the turnstiles, to the hospitality staff in the sponsor boxes to the pitch runners, security and stewards in the stands; every garment being worn across the stadium has been hand packed and quality checked before leaving our door.

This season also sees the introduction of EcoVis garments to the club.

Manufactured by our supply partner Leo Workwear, the EcoVis range uses recycled and sustainably sourced materials to produce high-visibility garments without compromising on quality or performance.

It is always a privilege to work so closely with our customers and build lasting partnerships year after year.

Here's to another action packed season ahead both on and off the pitch.

B:friend are tackling loneliness across our region, putting people and connection at the heart of what they do, which is a belief we share at Arden Winch.

We’re incredibly proud to continue our support for b:friend and to play a small part in helping them continue the amazing work they do.

Thank you to all the team at b:friend and good luck to everyone taking part on court.

10 years of birdboxes and we’re adding more 🐦‍⬛

What many people don't know is that our site isn't just home to us, each week we see a huge range of feathered friends on site:

🪶Starlings
🪶Blackbirds
🪶Robins
🪶Long-tailed t**s
🪶Blue t**s
🪶Magpies
🪶Sparrows
🪶Wrens
🪶Goldfinches
🪶Pied wagtails
And of course the very vocal seagulls.

Maintaining and nurturing the green spaces on and around our site has always been important to us at Arden Winch.

Nearly all of our Sheffield site perimeter is lined with trees and bushes, including berry bushes and seasonal roses which provide food, shelter and habitat for a variety of wildlife.

So, this week we have given our feathered friends a little more space to thrive with the addition of two new bird boxes nestled within the trees.

We're looking forward to seeing who moves in!
