REACH is an innovative engineering system developed to help tackle complex challenges within the nuclear sector, bringing together advanced engineering, robotics and lightweight structural technology in one collaborative solution.

Eadon Consulting LtdEadon Consulting Ltd has led the design and development of REACH, working closely with Sellafield Ltd, Createc and Carbon ThreeSixty Ltd to turn an ambitious idea into a real, working system.

What makes this project particularly special is the collaboration behind it. Each organisation has brought its own specialist expertise to the table, from engineering design and robotics control to advanced carbon fibre structures, all working towards a shared goal.

It’s been a journey of problem-solving, development and new ideas, and we’re incredibly proud of what the whole REACH team has achieved and to see the system reach this stage.

Projects like this show what can be achieved when the right people, with the right knowledge work together.

Eadon Consulting Ltd recently provided specialist engineering support for ‘Over Easy’, a rotating artwork by the British sculptor Richard Wilson, which is built into the facade of the ARC building in Stockton-on-Tees.

Over Easy was made for the ARC Stockton Arts Centre, which opened in 1999. The artwork is an 8-metre-wide rotating disc set into the building’s curved façade. As it slowly turns in both directions, it changes how the building looks.

Richard Wilson worked with Price and Myers on the sculpture's original design. Now, more than 25 years later, Price & Myers invited Eadon to assess the rotating mechanism to help ensure it can continue to operate reliably.

Eadon inspected the mechanism in situ and monitored the sculpture as it rotated. Following the inspection, we provided recommendations and an outline maintenance schedule to allow them to keep it running reliably in the future.

Our experience with complex moving structures helped us assess the system and offer practical advice for future maintenance, supporting the preservation of this unique piece of public artwork.

Eadon Consulting Ltd was recently appointed by Amey to carry out a mechanical and electrical inspection on Bell’s Place Bridge, a small footbridge which spans the Water of Leith in Edinburgh.

Even though it’s small, the bridge has a unique and clever lifting mechanism. Unlike many lift bridges, which open by pivoting upwards, the entire deck of Bell’s Place Bridge rises vertically. A system of steel cables, pulleys and winding equipment lifts the deck between four concrete columns, known as pilasters. Guides within the pilasters help to keep the deck straight and level as it moves.

The bridge only needs to be raised during periods of flooding and was originally designed for manual operation - however, the number of turns required to lift the deck made this impractical, so a motor was added to power the winding mechanism.

As part of the bridge’s six-yearly principal inspection, Eadon assessed its mechanical and electrical systems, while Amey prepared a structural report on behalf of the City of Edinburgh Council.

Overall, the lifting equipment was found to be in good working order, with no significant mechanical work required.

It was a pleasure to work with Amey again and to examine a unique and interesting piece of bridge engineering.
