🇺🇸Ivanhoe Atlantic & Guinea 🇬🇳: Securing U.S. Supply Chains in West Africa

Together with the U.S Embassy Charge d'Affaires Mary E. Daschbach, Ivanhoe Atlantic COO Kevin McLean and SMFG Director General Oumar Sylla recently met with Minister Djiba Diakite (Chief of Staff to the President) and Minister Aly Seydouba Soumah (Advisor to the President) in Conakry.

This productive audience with the President’s chief advisors is testament to our close collaboration with the Government of Guinea as we bring online the world’s highest grade iron ore project.

Not only will Kon Kweni deliver thousands of jobs and new economic development opportunities through direct American investment into Guinea, the project forms a key element in securing new supply chains in West Africa for the United States.

With access to port and rail secured through Liberia, and final mine permitting in progress in Guinea, we stand ready to deliver.

As part of our ongoing collaboration with the U.S. Embassy in Conakry, this week Ivanhoe Atlantic COO Kevin McLean and SMFG Director General Oumar Sylla met with Chargé d'Affaires Mary E. Daschbach to provide an update on the world’s highest grade iron ore project at Kon Kweni.

As an American company, Ivanhoe Atlantic is securing critical supply chains for the U.S. while providing a genuine national partnership model which brings long-standing benefits for our host countries. This is why the Government of Guinea will receive roughly 50 per cent of the economic dividend of Kon Kweni over the life of the mine, along with thousands of new jobs and economic development opportunities.

With construction readiness rapidly advancing in line with final regulatory permitting, we stand ready to deliver.

As we prepare for construction readiness in Guinea, earlier this week Oumar Sylla Director General of SMFG joined Aurore Cuffi General Manager of Operations at meetings in N'Zerekore including a project update with the Governor, Colonel Moussa Conde.

As a 15 per cent part owner of Kon Kweni, our partnership with the Guinean Government will help deliver the world’s highest grade iron ore project and with it much needed economic prosperity for the country through jobs and $16.7 billion in taxes and royalties.

Ivanhoe Atlantic was honored to join Chargé d’Affaires Joseph Zadrozny from U.S. Embassy Monrovia, Liberia on a visit to the Port of Buchanan where we shared our plans for major expansion and improvement works.

Combined with our proposed logistics upgrades to the Yekepa–Buchanan heavy haul rail line, we plan to invest $1 billion in infrastructure across Liberia, making it one of the largest infrastructure investments in the country’s modern history resulting in thousands of new employment opportunities.

As an American company, we are grateful for this continued support from the U.S as we work towards securing critical mineral supply chains in West Africa.

Ivanhoe Atlantic is working closely with Nimba communities to move the Kon Kweni Ultra High Grade Iron Ore Project forward in a responsible and transparent way.

This weekend, together with accredited EPA consultants, Earthtime, we met with the Liberian Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and representatives from Nimba County to discuss the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) for the railway and port infrastructure that will support the project.

During the meeting, Ivanhoe Atlantic in Liberia openly explained how the project plans to engage with communities and how support funding will be allocated. This open discussion helped build trust and allowed community voices to be heard.

The ESIA has taken several years and includes environmental studies, social research, and regular community engagement. The process follows international best-practice standards.

With the ratification of our Concession and Access Agreement in December 2025, Ivanhoe Atlantic now has access to the Yekepa–Buchanan railway and port, which pass through Nimba, B**g, and Grand Bassa counties. This is an important step toward bringing investment to Nimba and creating around 500 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs in Liberia over the project’s lifetime.
