🔥 Thinking about replacing an ageing boiler? The cheapest quote isn’t always the cheapest option.
An older boiler can often keep running for years, but as it ages you may start to notice:
✅ Higher gas bills
✅ More frequent breakdowns and repair costs
✅ Poorer hot water performance
✅ Longer warm-up times
✅ Parts becoming harder or more expensive to source
✅ Less control over your heating
A modern, correctly sized boiler with good controls can make your heating system more efficient, reliable and easier to manage — while also giving you the reassurance of a manufacturer warranty.
But there’s something customers don’t always see when comparing boiler quotations…
🔍 The hidden cost of a proper boiler installation
The boiler itself is only part of the job.
There are often a lot of additional materials and components needed to complete an installation properly, such as:
🔧 Magnetic system filter
🧪 Inhibitor and system-cleaning chemicals
💧 Shock arrestor where required
🚿 New filling loop components
🔥 Gas pipework, fittings and isolation valves
💨 Flue extensions, elbows and support brackets
💧 Condensate pipework, fittings and insulation
🔩 Copper pipe, clips, fittings and valves
🧱 Core-drilling materials and weather sealing
⚡ Electrical controls, wiring and fused-spur alterations where required
🌡️ New programmable or smart heating controls
🪛 Fixings, brackets, screws and consumables
🧼 Dust sheets and protection for the customer’s home
📋 Commissioning, testing and manufacturer registration
Depending on the installation, there may also be extra work involved in upgrading old pipework, correcting poorly installed condensate runs, improving system protection or bringing parts of the installation up to current standards.
All of these smaller items add up.
Then there’s the part you really can’t see on a quotation:
👨🔧 The time spent doing the job properly
A quality installation should include:
✔️ Cleaning and flushing the existing heating system
✔️ Checking the gas supply is suitable
✔️ Correctly sizing and installing pipework
✔️ Correct flue installation and support
✔️ Correct condensate installation and frost protection
✔️ Setting up the controls properly
✔️ Gas-rate, combustion and safety testing
✔️ Balancing and commissioning the heating system
✔️ Completing Benchmark documentation
✔️ Registering the boiler warranty
✔️ Protecting your home and leaving everything clean and tidy
✔️ Providing aftercare if you need us afterwards
This is why two companies can quote very different prices for what, on paper, looks like exactly the same boiler.
At Afterglow Heating Ltd, we don’t aim to be the cheapest company in Southampton.
We aim to install your boiler properly, use quality materials, protect your heating system and allow enough time to do the job to the standard we would expect in our own homes.
A boiler may be in your home for the next 10–15 years or longer.
Saving a few hundred pounds on installation day can look very different when that cost is spread across the life of the boiler.
🔥 If your boiler is getting older and you’re wondering whether it’s time to repair or replace it, we’re always happy to give straightforward advice.
