🚢 Proud project spotlight: Designing Toronto’s first floating sauna

We’re excited to share a unique marine design project BYD had the privilege to work on- the custom design for the Löyly Floating Sauna, now open on the Toronto Waterfront.

At BYD, we enjoy projects that bring variety and challenge conventional marine design processes. From ensuring stability in an active harbour environment to integrating structure and systems with long-term maintainability in mind, this was a rewarding collaboration and a strong example of adaptable floating infrastructure.

Fantastic day on the water ahead of Seawork with VITA Power.
Thanks to Clive Johnson and Nigel Watkins for demonstrating their electric propulsion system from the assembly line to the finished product and the Aqua superPower Limited DC fast charging which topped up the batteries over a short coffee break.

A fun and interesting project carried out by BYD looking into the structural analysis and function of a new slipway. To complete this project we used a mixture of Inventor Nastran FEA software and in house developed engineering spreadsheets to define, analyse and propose solutions for removing vessels on a steep slipway with tight clearances.

Recently BYD UK were busy laser scanning the Dorset Queen for , in order to re-establish the information for the exterior hull and interior to carry out some engineering on modifications.

The Dorset Queen was built in Scotland in 1938, and gained a National Historic Ships designation in 2018. This vessel is primarily used as a passenger vessel hosting events along the stunning Dorset coastline.

BYD Canada have been on survey for to get the newest addition to the fleet reflagged for Canadian waters. The 163' passenger vessel will find a new home in Toronto harbour. Currently in drydock at for the required refit work to get certified for operation.
