The recent push towards “plug-in solar” products is generating a lot of attention across the UK renewable sector.

While increasing access to low-carbon technology is a positive step, the latest guidance from the IET highlights why consumers should approach these products with caution.

Unlike standard household appliances, plug-in solar units introduce a new source of electricity directly into a property’s electrical installation. In many UK homes, ageing wiring, outdated protective devices or historic DIY alterations may mean installations are simply not suitable without professional verification.

The IET has raised concerns around:

• Electrical safety and suitability of existing wiring

• Older RCDs not operating correctly with back-fed generation

• Potential overload and back-feed risks

• Safe disconnection during faults or power outages

• Consumer assumptions that these products are simply “plug and play”

As electrical professionals, we fully support innovation and the transition towards renewable energy. However, safety, compliance and realistic consumer awareness must remain the priority.

The message from the IET is clear: households should have their installation checked by a competent electrician before considering the use of any plug-in generation equipment.
