Passing at commissioning confirms the condition of an earthing system on the day it was tested. Corrosion, damaged connections, site modifications and incomplete records move a system away from that baseline over the years that follow, which is why annual inspection and risk-based periodic testing belong in the maintenance strategy for operational sites.

Depending on the installation and the records available, an earthing inspection carried out by EPS can cover the original design, accessible conductors and terminations, bonding arrangements, continuity testing and earth resistance measurements.

Where an issue is found, our reports explain what it means for the site and how to correct rather than logging it and moving on. Recommendations are prioritised around safety and operational impact, with remedial options set out alongside any access or outage considerations they carry. Site teams end up with an impartial read on the condition of the system and a route to closing any compliance gaps.

Unbeaten, Europa League winners, and heading to the National Finals! 🏆⚽

Team EPS returned to Goals yesterday for the Business Fives Tees Valley 5-A-Side Tournament, joining businesses from across the region for another competitive day of football and fundraising.

Thankfully, conditions were quite different from our last Business Fives appearance. We swapped the freezing cold for sunshine this time around, although playing a full day of football in the heat brought its own new challenges!

The team went unbeaten throughout the tournament, finishing the day by winning the Europa League final and securing a place at the Business Fives National Finals in Birmingham this October.

A special mention goes to our very own Elliott Morgan, who picked up the Golden Glove award after conceding just three goals all day and making some fantastic saves🧤.

The result also gave our fundraising an extra boost. We had already raised £365 for The Headlight Project, with our Europa League win adding a further £150 donation from Business Fives, bringing the final total to £515.

Across the tournament, the teams collectively raised an impressive £3,240 for their chosen charities, making it a successful day both on and off the pitch.

The day finished with a Q&A with former West Ham player Frank Nouble, who shared plenty of stories from his career before presenting the awards.

Thank you to everyone who donated, shared our fundraising page or supported the team. It is genuinely appreciated and will help support The Headlight Project's work with children and families across the local area.

Once a BESS compound is energised, the earthing system can quickly become one of the least visible parts of the asset.

On a recent BESS compound survey, EPS carried out an earthing and bonding gap analysis against the original design.

Much of the visible installation was in acceptable condition, but the survey still identified important details: several transformer earth terminations were showing signs of corrosion, and there was no recent test and inspection record available for the system.

The work gave the client a prioritised view of what needed attention, what required testing, and what could not be confirmed without further access.

For BESS owners and operators, that kind of evidence is useful when planning maintenance, remedial work and ongoing compliance activity.

A past inspection doesn’t tell you the condition of your earthing system today.

Over time, sites evolve as equipment is added or replaced and connections begin to deteriorate, meaning that what is actually installed can gradually start to differ from the original drawings and records held on file.

For site owners and operators, that creates a simple problem: are you relying on evidence of the system’s current condition, or evidence from the last time it was checked?

Periodic earthing inspection and testing can help identify deterioration and verify continuity, while also confirming whether the installed system still reflects the available documentation.

EPS provides earthing system testing and inspection services including visual surveys, continuity testing, Fall of Potential (FoP) testing and detailed earthing system audits.

The result is clear, defensible evidence of the system’s condition, supported by practical recommendations where further action is required.

Every earthing design rests on a soil model, and every soil model rests on how the survey data behind it was interpreted.

Site testing records apparent resistivity across a range of electrode spacings. Those measurements are then interpreted into a uniform or multi-layer soil model.

The resulting model is a key input to earth potential rise (EPR) calculations and to the assessment of touch and step voltages, so it needs sufficient and representative field data behind it.

Too few measurements, an inadequate range of electrode spacings, or testing in ground conditions that are not representative of the proposed installation can leave the soil model poorly constrained. The model may appear mathematically credible, while the assumed layer resistivities and depths are not adequately supported by the survey data.

Any uncertainty introduced at this stage is then carried through the subsequent earthing calculations.

For UK installations above 1 kV AC, BS EN 50522:2022+A1:2024 sets requirements for the design and er****on of earthing systems. The standard covers soil resistivity measurements and the assessment of touch and step voltages.

BS 7430:2026 also addresses soil composition and soil resistivity as important site considerations within protective-earthing practice.

EPS carries out both soil resistivity testing and earthing modelling in-house. This allows the survey scope, test locations and electrode spacings to be planned around the requirements of the analysis, rather than attempting to fit the modelling to incomplete field data afterwards.

53% of electricity in Q2 2026 was provided by renewables in the UK. Over the same quarter, 2.4 TWh of potential wind generation was curtailed; that equates to around 15% of potential output.

Together, the figures show renewable output increasing, while network capacity and flexibility struggle to keep pace in constrained parts of the UK's electrical grid.

Grid-scale battery capacity stood at 7.3 GW in June, against a Clean Power 2030 ambition of 23 to 27 GW. How quickly projects secure connections will have a major influence on how that gap closes.

Our latest data sheet brings together the renewable energy position in Q2 2026 across renewable generation, curtailment, connection offer progress and energy storage installations.

For projects in development, the network originally used for modelling may not be the network the development eventually connects to. Connection assumptions, operating scenarios and equipment ratings should be reviewed before the design becomes difficult to change.

Adding solar PV to an operational site changes the electrical conditions the existing network, equipment and protection systems were designed around☀️.

EPS recently completed load flow, short-circuit and protection grading studies for an 815 kWp solar PV connection at a live water treatment site.

The studies confirmed busbar voltages stayed within limits and that the proposed PV transformer had enough capacity. They also flagged issues to resolve before detailed design: an existing transformer running close to its assumed rating, two switchboards needing further fault-level assessment, and protection settings requiring verification.

By identifying these constraints early, the client received a clear and practical set of actions to take forward into detailed design.

After a fantastic day at the Business Fives Tees Valley 5-a-Side Tournament back in February, we're looking forward to taking part again on 26th August.

Last time, we braved the cold. This time, it looks like we'll be taking on the summer heat. ☀️

The tournament is a great opportunity for businesses across the region to come together for some friendly competition while raising money for worthwhile local causes. It's also a chance for Team EPS to get together and give something back to our local community.

When an existing in-service 400kV circuit breaker was identified as unsuitable by an established harmonic equipment manufacturer, we (EPS) were contacted to confirm their calculations.

In our latest case study, we explain how our engineers carried out Transient Recovery Voltage (TRV) and Rate of Rise of Recovery Voltage (RRRV) modelling and analysis to determine whether an existing 400kV harmonic filter circuit breaker is suitable by supporting its acceptance for the relevant fault levels.

If our client proceeded with the manufacturer's recommendations, they would have been pushed towards costly equipment changes and lost generation revenue.

The study helped our client avoid unnecessary 400kV network modifications.

We are seeing this more and more where manufacturers and/or consultancy companies are mistakenly sizing the wrong equipment or making incorrect recommendations for electrical balance of plant connected to the grid.
