🚶‍♂️ Kicking off the EPS Steps Challenge!🚶‍♀️

At EPS, we’re always looking for ways to encourage wellbeing, teamwork, and a positive workplace culture, which is why this week we launched our EPS Steps Challenge.

Over the next four weeks, teams across EPS will be competing to see who can take the most steps and claim the title of Steps Challenge Champions.

What started as a wellbeing initiative has already brought out plenty of friendly competition, with some impressive early step counts being recorded across the business despite the rainy weather this week! 🌧️

It’s great to see so many people getting involved by getting outside more during the day and embracing the challenge.

Good luck to all teams taking part. We’re looking forward to seeing the progress, photos, teamwork and competitive spirit over the coming weeks!

Upgrading LVAC switchboard infrastructure on operational substation sites is rarely a simple replacement exercise.

Across the wider programme of work, EPS has been supporting infrastructure upgrades across 20+ substation sites. The scope includes LV switchboard replacements, diesel generator installations, DC battery system upgrades, transformer condition monitoring, protection and control panel replacements, inter-trip earth fault protection, and substation earthing modelling and analysis for a 132 kV substation.

As part of the ongoing LVAC switchboard upgrade project, the first new switchboard modification has now been delivered to the site, installed, tested and brought into service.

The project required a bespoke switchboard design, including a direct busbar connection between the new and existing systems. This interface introduced significant complexity across both the design and installation phases, requiring close coordination and careful technical management while maintaining the existing system continuously in service.

For projects of this nature, the detail matters.

Design decisions affect installation methodology, commissioning, operational continuity and the way new infrastructure interfaces with existing assets. Early technical input helps reduce avoidable disruption, manage integration risk and support a smoother transition from design through to energisation.

With Site Acceptance Testing complete and the first LVAC switchboard now in service, this marks an important milestone in the programme and a positive step towards the next phase of delivery.

A well-earned milestone, congratulations to all involved.

There are always subtle differences between calculated values and measurements obtained from existing earthing systems

Similar statements repeatedly came up recently at the Earthing Conference, attended by members of the EPS team.

Substations can remain in service for decades. Over that time, asset records can become incomplete, site conditions can change, and assumptions made during earlier design or assessment work may no longer reflect the installation as it stands today.

That has direct implications for earthing design work involving modifying or adding new earthing systems to existing ones.

A calculation is only as reliable as the data behind it. Where records are missing, outdated, or uncertain, site testing is often the most reliable way to close that gap.

Current injection testing was one method discussed in detail during the conference. However, it is not always specified to carry out this type of testing on UK site scope of work requirements, but the case for it is practical: by measuring current paths directly, including through cable sheaths and overhead line routes, it allows split current calculations to be verified through measurement rather than modelling alone.

On older sites, especially, that distinction matters.

Where earthing conditions are unsafe or unverified, the consequences extend beyond compliance. Personnel safety, asset protection, and confidence in future design decisions are all affected.

EPS regularly supports clients with earthing modelling and design, soil resistivity surveys, fall-of-potential (FoP) testing, touch and step voltage assessments, and wider site-testing programmes.

If you are reviewing an existing substation or planning a new installation, verification should be part of the conversation.

Get in touch to discuss your project requirements.

There’s no shortage of project momentum across renewables and energy infrastructure right now.

What’s coming through in conversations at All-Energy is the gap between that momentum and the electrical detail needed to move forward: grid connection applications, HV design, studies that need to be scoped early, and the connection strategy decisions that underpin it all.

The EPS team has been talking through exactly those challenges at Stand F38, covering power system studies, grid code compliance, earthing, HV/LV design and connection strategy with developers, ICPs, consultants and asset owners working across the sector.

If you didn’t make it across yesterday, the team are back today and available to talk through your project requirements.

Whether you’re in early-stage development or heading into detailed design, speak with the team before the show closes.

Day 1 âś…

Great to be back on the show floor speaking with project teams across renewables, storage, and the wider power sector.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the EPS stand today; it was a pleasure to meet and catch up, and if we didn’t get a chance to speak, we’d love to see you tomorrow.

We'll be back on stand F38 all day – come and see us to continue the conversation, meet the team and discuss how EPS can support your next project.

Over the past 12 months, our headcount has more than doubled. In that time, many colleagues have progressed significantly within their first one to two years with us. Advancement here is not defined by tenure alone. It is earned through trust, responsibility, and the opportunity to take ownership.

We encourage our engineers to step forward early. That may mean leading complex power system studies, mentoring new team members, or supporting the delivery of high-profile projects across our core sectors. Everyone contributes to the direction of the business.

Our structure supports quick decisions, recognises achievement, and rewards performance as it happens. As we grow, capability and accountability grow with us.

We measure progress by the strength of what we deliver. That remains the standard as we continue to scale.

Apprentice Spotlight | Alfie, CAD Technician Apprentice 👷‍♂️⚡

From technical drawings to complex power system projects, Alfie’s apprenticeship at EPS has involved real responsibility since day one.

“It’s been really interesting and eye-opening. I’ve learned a lot, even if I don’t always realise it until I look back at where I started. I’ve really enjoyed it so far, and I like getting involved in as much as possible.”

As a CAD Technician apprentice, Alfie supports active projects, working alongside experienced engineers and developing both technical capability and the transferable skills needed in a professional consultancy environment.

In our latest article, Alfie shares what it’s like working across complex engineering projects, the skills he’s been developing on the job and how his apprenticeship has shaped his future.
