Traditional or contemporary. Always bespoke 🛠️

From substantial timber garages and workshops to garden offices, verandas and more unusual one-off projects, there’s quite a variety to what we build at Axe & Timber.

Some clients arrive with architectural drawings, others with an idea they’ve been thinking about for years. We enjoy working with both, getting to know the property, exploring the options and working out the details that will make the finished building work for them.

We’re a small Devon team, and we take on each project individually, with Charlie involved from the initial discussions through to construction. We’re currently welcoming enquiries for upcoming projects, so if you’ve got something in mind, we’d be pleased to hear about it.

You’ve got an idea. So, what happens next? 🔨

Some clients come to us with a full set of architectural drawings, others with a photograph they’ve saved or an idea they’ve been sitting on for years. Both are absolutely fine by us.

We’ll come and see your property, take measurements and talk through what you’re hoping to achieve. From there, we’ll work through the design with you, often producing sketches and drawings so you can visualise the finished building before we’ve even picked up a piece of timber.

Once the specification and quotation are agreed, we’ll get everything organised and set you up with your own dedicated Axe & Timber client portal, giving you easy access to drawings, documents, project schedules and updates throughout the build.

And because we’re a small team, you’ll deal directly with Charlie from the first conversation through to the finishing touches. We put a lot of care into what we build, and we want you to feel that same level of care throughout the whole experience.

You don’t need to know exactly what you want before getting in touch. That’s what we’re here to help with!

Whether you’re considering a timber garage, garden office, workshop or something completely different, we’d love to hear what you have in mind. Based in Devon, building across the South West. This is how you can get in touch:

That extra metre might be the best money you spend on the whole build 🔨

Not because we want to add more timber to the quote, but because there’s nothing worse than investing in a new workshop or garage and realising six months later that another metre would have completely changed how you use it.

That extra space might mean being able to walk comfortably around the car with the doors open, fitting a full-length workbench without sacrificing storage, leaving room for machinery, or simply not having to move three things every time you want to get to the fourth.

And when you’re already putting in foundations, building a frame and installing a roof, it’s worth looking at the bigger picture before deciding on the final dimensions.

We’ll always ask what needs to go inside now, and what might need to go inside in five or ten years’ time.

Sometimes the original size is absolutely right. Sometimes, once we’ve marked it out and talked through how the space will actually work, adding that little bit extra makes far more sense.

A bespoke building should fit your life, not just fit the available patch of ground. A metre on a drawing might not look like much. Inside the finished building, it can make all the difference.

Planning a garage or workshop? Come to us with what you need to fit inside and we’ll help work out the space around it. Based in Devon, building across the South West. This is how you can get in touch:

Axe & Timber. Bespoke timber work, built here in Devon 🌲🔨

We’re a small team taking on projects across Devon and the South West, from substantial timber buildings to the smaller one-off jobs that need something made specifically for the space. So, what do we actually do?

🔨 Bespoke timber garages
🔨 Workshops & sheds
🔨 Garden offices & cabins
🔨 Verandas & pergolas
🔨 Outbuildings & log stores
🔨 Fencing & gates
🔨 Decking & outdoor spaces
🔨 Bespoke joinery & timber furniture
🔨 Groundworks & concrete bases
🔨 One-off timber structures that don’t quite fit into any of the above

Traditional or contemporary, big build or small, everything is designed around the property, how it needs to be used and the people using it.

And then there’s Spud, our four-legged colleague, site supervisor and occasional quality-control department. His practical contribution remains questionable, but morale would be considerably lower without him 🐾

If you’ve got something in mind, even if it’s currently nothing more than an idea, get in touch. We’re always interested to hear what you’re thinking. This is how you can get in touch:

Why don’t we hide every joint? Because sometimes how something is built deserves to be seen 🔨

This is a close-up from the Japanese Machiai we built for a client in Bishops Nympton, using locally sourced green Douglas fir and traditional timber-framing methods.

On our traditional timber-framed projects, the mortise and tenon joints, timber pegs and connections aren’t details we’re trying to disguise. They’re part of the character of the finished structure.

Mortise and tenon joinery has been used in timber framing for centuries. One piece of timber is carefully shaped to fit into another before the joint is secured with a timber peg, allowing the frame itself to provide the connection.

When it’s done well, there’s no reason to cover that craftsmanship up. The exposed pegs become part of the design, the joints show how the frame has been constructed and the grain, knots and natural variations remind you that you’re looking at real timber, not something manufactured to appear perfectly uniform.

That doesn’t mean we use traditional joinery everywhere. A contemporary garage or workshop might call for completely different construction methods and modern fixings. But when a project suits traditional timber framing, we think the construction should be allowed to become part of its character.

It’s one of the reasons we love working with timber. The structure doesn’t always have to sit behind the finished surface. Sometimes, the structure is the finish!

If you’ve got an idea that calls for something a little different, traditional or completely bespoke, get in touch. We’d love to see what we can build for you🌲🔨 Based in Devon, building across the South West. This is how you can get in touch:

Before they become walls, they look a bit like this 🔨

Depending on the project, we’ll often build sections of the timber frame here in the workshop before taking them to site for the next stage of construction.

It means we can work accurately, check dimensions as we go and get certain elements prepared in a controlled environment, while the rest of the building comes together on site.

And although this might just look like a stack of timber frames, there’s already plenty of thought in them. Stud positions, openings, structural timber sizes and how each section connects to the next have all been worked out before we reach this point.

It’s one of those stages of a build that eventually disappears completely behind membranes, battens, cladding and internal finishes.

Not much to look at yet. Quite a lot going on underneath! We’ll show you where these end up next 🌲

When Axe & Timber started in 2022, it was a name, some tools and plenty of ideas about the sort of business we wanted to build.

A few years on, it’s pretty cool seeing that name embroidered onto the workwear while standing in a workshop full of timber for projects we probably wouldn’t have imagined taking on back then.

There’s still plenty we want to do, plenty we want to build and a lot of sawdust to make along the way.

For now though, we’ll enjoy the rare moment everything is clean and neatly folded. Big thanks to Threads Embroidery & Print for bringing the new kit to life 🤝

Log burner season is officially back 🪵🔥

If you’ve already stocked up for winter, how you store your firewood now will make a big difference to how well it burns over the colder months.

Quality airflow, keeping logs off damp ground and protecting them from the worst of the rain all help your firewood stay dry and ready to burn, so we’ve put together our top tips for storing logs this autumn and winter.

Swipe through and save this one for later 👉🏼

And if you’d rather get completely winter-ready, we can help with that too. We deliver logs locally direct to your door and build bespoke timber log stores, from compact stores beside the house to much larger structures for serious winter stockpiles.

Built to keep your firewood dry, ventilated and in the best condition for when you need it 🌲

Logs sorted. Storage sorted. Bring on winter!
