Free homeowner tip: know where your stop taps are.

One of the simplest things you can do to protect your home is to know where your internal stop tap and external stop c**k are.

If you ever have a burst pipe, a major leak, or a plumbing emergency, being able to quickly shut off the water can reduce damage, stress, and costs.

Your internal stop tap is often found under the kitchen sink, in a utility cupboard, downstairs toilet or near where the water enters the property.

Your external stop c**k is usually outside, often near the boundary, pavement or driveway. It is also worth checking that it can be accessed and is not seized or buried.

A few minutes spent finding them now could make a huge difference in an emergency.

One of today’s call-outs was for a 5-year-old boiler.
The system had a new boiler, new pipework and a new cylinder — but this is what we found inside the magnetic filter.
That black sludge is magnetite, caused by corrosion inside the heating system. Left untreated, it can block heat exchangers, damage pumps and valves, reduce efficiency, and eventually lead to expensive boiler repairs.
A new boiler is only as good as the system it is connected to.

Buy cheap, pay twice.
We know The GHS Group may not always be the cheapest quote.
But we price our work properly so it can be done properly.
Correct installation, proper commissioning, warranty registration, manufacturer guidance and aftercare all matter.
We have never lost a warranty claim due to poor workmanship, and if something ever needs putting right, we go back and deal with it.
That is why we do not race to be the cheapest.
We would rather be known for doing the job right.

We lost this boiler install on price a couple of years ago.
Now the original installer has moved away, and the customer has asked us to take over.
Before we’ve even knocked the door, there are already visible issues from outside:
the old flue hole appears not to have been filled in properly
the new flue appears unsealed externally
and it doesn’t appear to have been properly cemented in
Choosing the cheapest quote can sometimes cost more later.

We recently found a worn ignition kit during a boiler service. Left unnoticed, this could easily have caused a breakdown.
A cheap safety check may only confirm the boiler is safe at that moment. A proper service looks deeper, helping to spot wear and prevent future problems.
