Winter is coming, and now is the ideal time to check your boiler and central heating system. Annual boiler servicing, pressure checks, radiator bleeding, pipe lagging and early fault diagnosis can all help reduce the risk of a heating breakdown when the cold weather arrives. If you have concerns about your boiler, radiators, heating controls or hot water, contact GHS Group before winter hits

A small leak can turn into a much bigger repair bill.
We were called to a home where a three-port heating valve had been leaking for some time. Unfortunately, the leak was left long enough for water to eventually reach the heating pump below.
The result? The pump short-circuited and tripped the electrics in the house.
Instead of simply dealing with the leaking valve, the customer ultimately needed both the three-port valve and the pump replaced — adding several hundred pounds to the repair.
The important lesson for homeowners is simple: don’t ignore small leaks around your heating system. A slight drip, staining, corrosion or dampness around a valve may not look urgent, but water has a habit of finding its way into electrical components.
Spot something leaking around your boiler, cylinder or heating controls? Getting it checked early could prevent a much more expensive repair later.

Old building. Tired décor. But that doesn’t mean the workmanship should match.

This was a relatively simple heating repair, but we still took the time to make the new copper pipework straight, neat, and properly finished.

At The GHS Group, we believe the standard of our work should be the same whether we’re fitting a completely new heating system or carrying out a small repair on an older property.

The surrounding building might have seen better days, but our part of the job should always look like someone cared about it.

Good workmanship isn’t just about making something work. It’s about taking pride in the installation, even when most people might never notice the difference.

A small missing part can cause a big problem…

Today we were called out to investigate a water leak in a customer’s roof void.

After working in a very tight, awkward loft space, we traced the leak to a 15mm push-fit isolation valve.

The problem wasn’t necessarily the fitting itself. When the pipework was originally installed, the plastic pipe insert/stiffener had been left out of the 15mm pipe.

That little insert is there for an important reason: it supports the plastic pipe inside the fitting and helps it maintain the correct shape so the O-ring can form a reliable seal. Without it, the connection can eventually start to leak.

In this case, one tiny missing component resulted in a leak hidden away in a roof space — exactly the sort of place where water can cause considerable damage before anyone realises there is a problem.

It’s a good reminder that the small details matter.

At The GHS Group, we don’t just look at where the water is coming from—we look at why it leaked in the first place.

Free homeowner tip: keep your boiler paperwork safe.

Your service records, Benchmark paperwork and warranty details are more important than many people realise.

If you ever have a warranty claim on your boiler, the manufacturer may ask to see proof that the boiler has been installed, commissioned and serviced correctly.

Keeping the paperwork safe can also help other engineers understand the history of your boiler, what work has been carried out and whether there have been any previous issues.

A small folder, email file or photo backup could save a lot of stress later.

Paperwork matters.
Warranty records matter.
Service history matters.

During a routine commercial catering call-out, we found an air pressure switch on a gas interlock that had been linked out. This is not a proper repair. An air pressure switch helps prove that the kitchen ventilation is working before gas is allowed to the appliances. If it is bypassed, gas may be available even when the extract system has failed or airflow is poor. GHS Group can help with commercial kitchen gas interlocks, CP42 checks and catering gas safety inspections.

Free homeowner tip: check your radiator valves before winter.

Thermostatic radiator valves can stick if left untouched for long periods, especially during the warmer months when the heating is off.

Before the colder weather arrives, turn each radiator valve up and down a few times to help keep it moving freely.

It is a simple check, but it could help prevent radiators from heating properly when you need them most.

A few minutes now could save you stress on the first cold day.

For heating, plumbing and boiler support, call or email GHS today.
