Why doesn’t the UK use more renewable energy?⁠

Interestingly, the UK is a global leader in offshore wind energy, with 7.5 million homes powered by it. Additionally, around 1.5 million homes have solar panels, and we also utilise hydroelectric and bioenergy sources.⁠

In 2023, we produced our trillionth kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity generated from renewable sources. Enough to power UK homes for 12 years, based on average consumption. Although it took 50 years to reach that milestone, projections suggest it will take just over five years to reach the next trillionth kWh.⁠

Stop wasting your solar energy.

It's not unusual for your solar panels to generate more power than you need. So, what can you do with the excess?

1. Store it in batteries: Surplus electricity can be captured and stored for later use. This option is perfect for off-grid setups or during those seemingly never-ending cloudy days when sunlight is scarce.

2. Feed it back into the electrical grid: In most grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems, any excess electricity is funnelled directly into the grid. You can supply the grid through net metering and earn valuable credits for the surplus energy they generate, which can significantly offset future electricity bills. Here in the UK, you can maximise this benefit by selling excess electricity back to the grid via the Smart Export Guarantee.

3. Donate it: If you're feeling generous, you can donate surplus electricity to charitable organisations. This helps those in need and contributes to a greener planet by lowering your overall carbon footprint.

We checked in with a customer who recently had an ASHP and Solar fitted. Here's what he said:

'Just for your information. Had an energy bill for the last month from octopus: £135. Last month £314. Doesn’t seem possible to me but then despite the cold we’ve had lots of sun so solar panels doing their stuff. Shall keep monitoring and let you know. Gas meter gets removed on Monday so that should knock off another £10.'

Did you know that about 9 out of 10 homes in Iceland are heated using geothermal energy? Plus, nearly all of the country's electricity is sourced from renewable energy! Isn't that impressive?

In 2012 Sweden reached their target of 50% renewable energy (8 years ahead of schedule FYI). Fun fact: in Stockholm they use bodyheat from commuters passing through a central station to heat a nearby building.

In 2022, Costa Rica produced 98% of its electricity from renewable sources.

Different sized homes need different-sized heat pumps. ⁠

But it's not as easy as saying that a 3-bedroom house needs this size and a 6-bedroom house needs this size. ⁠

There's a reason why UK government grants are available, and heat pump sales continue to grow in the double digits year-on-year: heat pumps are an excellent, efficient way of heating your home. But when it comes to size? It's always best to speak to an expert.⁠
