How do mechanical forces impact the electrical properties of semiconductor and advanced materials?

While AFM/SPM techniques are very good at surface electrical characterisation with high-resolution topography, depth dependent electro-mechanical properties are hard to characterise.

With increasing load (AFM in pico- to low-micro-Newton range), damage to coated AFM probes increases, along with uncertainty in the conducting tip contact area.

However, with KLA Nanoindenter systems you can access micro-Newton to 1 Newton force range using a Tungsten Carbide Berkovich indenter tip, while applying a voltage measuring resistance.
