These doors in our workshop are built to swing both ways, and there's a very specific reason why.

In PET facilities, once a patient's been administered a radioactive isotope, they become the source, which means shielding is needed not just in the scan room, but around the toilet they use too.

That door normally only opens one way, but if a patient becomes unconscious inside, staff need to get in fast, whichever way it was set to swing. Every detail on this door, right down to the leaded stops and roller latch, was designed to make that possible in seconds.

As one of the largest veterinary groups in Europe, with imaging and diagnostics playing a big role across their practices, it was great to walk them through our factory tour and presentation, showing exactly how our radiation shielding solutions are designed, manufactured, and installed.

We take real pride in showing people what goes on behind the scenes here at Raybloc, and today's discussions were no exception, some brilliant questions and a genuinely great conversation all round.

Bespoke Hot WC design is the one case where a radiation shielding door has to swing both ways.

In PET and nuclear medicine facilities, once a patient has been administered a radioactive isotope, they become the source.

That's what makes radiation different to almost every other hazard. You're relying entirely on the shielding being correct, because there's no way to check it yourself in the moment.

That's the standard every Raybloc doorset is built to. Not just compliant on paper, but genuinely trustworthy for the people who'll be standing next to it every day.

🔍 A detail that catches a lot of architects off guard on imaging projects: lead glass has a sheet size limit.

Maximum sheet size for lead glazing is 2400mm x 1100mm. For structural openings greater than 2500mm x 1200mm, lead-lined mullions and transoms are used to split the opening into sections.

That limit is worth knowing before an opening is finalised on the drawings, not after. It can affect how the opening is sized, how the frame and glazing bars read on elevation, and what the sightlines through the window look like.

The frame matters just as much as the glass. Windows are specified to tie into whatever the wall is built from, lead-lined plasterboard, lead-lined plywood, or lead chevron bricks, using an overlapping lead lined frame and architrave.

Getting that coordination right at design stage, rather than fitting the window as an afterthought, keeps the shielding continuous through the whole wall.

None of this is complicated once it is on the radar. It just helps to be on the radar early, not at the point drawings are already locked in.

➡️ The UK is in the middle of a real PET-CT investment wave right now.

Several NHS trusts have installed new PET-CT and total-body PET scanners in recent years, with more currently in progress, including a new national imaging platform project backed by UKRI funding.

Every one of those installations means a room build or refurbishment, and PET-CT shielding isn't the same problem as standard X-ray.

The tracers involved emit higher-energy gamma radiation, and at those energies, straight joints between shielding blocks become a real weak point.

Radiation can stream through a flat seam far more easily than through an angled one.

That's the whole reason interlocking chevron bricks exist. The angled, overlapping joint geometry means there's no straight-line path for radiation to escape through, even at the energies PET-CT involves. It's a small structural detail that matters a lot more than it looks like it should.

If your practice or trust has a PET-CT room in the pipeline, it's worth getting shielding specified with the right geometry from the start, not retrofitted after a room's already built.

Something we notice on a lot of imaging refurbishment projects: the shielding calculations get signed off correctly, but nobody checks whether the room actually works for the people using it day to day.

Lead equivalence, door construction, screen positioning, these get specified against the RPA's report, and that part is usually solid.

What often doesn't get reviewed is the practical layout:

- Which way the door swings against corridor traffic
- Where the warning light sits relative to the entrance
- Whether the operator screen height suits the actual working position, rather than a generic drawing

All of it affects whether the room is easy or awkward to work in every day.

We see this most on projects where shielding is specified early and installed late, with no one checking back with the radiographers or imaging staff who'll actually use the space.

By the time anyone notices the door swing is wrong or the screen sightline is off, the room is built and changing it means real cost and disruption.

The fix is straightforward. A short walkthrough with the clinical team before the layout is locked, not after. It takes an hour and catches the kind of issue that's expensive to fix once the walls are up.

Sean has always had a passion for innovation and for building things properly, a quality that goes back to the earliest days of Raybloc, when he saw a gap others had missed and simply set out to fill it. That same curiosity and drive haven't faded one bit since.

Anyone who's worked with Sean knows he leads with genuine care, for the people around him, for getting things right, and for never settling for "good enough" when better is possible. It's that mix of ambition and heart that makes him who he is.

Today, we're not thinking about the business, we're simply celebrating Sean: the person, the leader, and the friend so many of us are lucky to know.

📽️ CT Room 2 and the door specification at Plymouth Community Diagnostic Centre.

This one focuses on the doorsets themselves, a leaf-and-a-half entrance door with a single Code 5 doorset through to the control room, mirrored across both CT rooms on this project.

A few specification details worth flagging for anyone speccing similar rooms:

- Blue laminate door finish, with hardwood primer-painted frames paint-matched to tie in with it

- No PVC encapsulation needed. These aren't operating theatres, so hygienic properties weren't a driving requirement, and the laminate itself wipes clean

- A rebated door to rebated meeting stile, removing the need for slamming strips, a detail RPAs consistently prefer

- Bead-fit vision panel with an interstitial blind unit, operated by a lever handle so the room can be closed off from view when needed

- Mag-locked access control with a flush finish, push plates and kick plates rather than a lock case, keeping the doors clean and simple
