🏃‍♂️ Please support Chris Highton as he takes on the Great North Run this September in aid of Alcohol Change UK

Chris, a Contracts Manager at Stobbarts, is running the 13.1-mile challenge to raise money for a charity that means a great deal to him.

Alcohol Change UK works to reduce alcohol-related harm and supports individuals, families and communities affected by alcohol-related issues across the UK.

Chris said:

"Like many people, I've seen the impact that alcohol-related issues can have on individuals, families and communities. Alcohol Change UK does fantastic work supporting those affected, and I'm proud to be raising money to help them continue making a difference."

Every donation – no matter the size – will help support the charity's important work and encourage Chris as he trains for race day.

We’re pleased to announce the addition of two new electric vans to our fleet, along with the installation of new EV charging points at our offices and storage yard.

Two EV chargepoints have been installed at our offices, supporting our new pool EV van and providing free charging for employees' privately owned electric vehicles to encourage lower-carbon commuting and business travel.

We've also installed a chargepoint at our storage yard serving our Tool and Plant Hire Division, supporting a second electric van and helping reduce emissions across our day-to-day operations.

These investments form part of our ongoing commitment to
reducing our environmental impact. Alongside expanding our electric vehicle capability, we have already:
• Installed solar PV systems at our offices and welfare facilities
• Transitioned to energy-efficient LED lighting
• Moved to digital, paperless workflows wherever possible
• Encouraged car sharing, active travel and participation in our Cycle to Work scheme
• Supported tree-planting initiatives through project delivery
• Run all diesel plant on HVO biofuel to reduce lifecycle carbon emissions

To ensure we're taking the right steps and measuring our progress accurately, we're working with Litmus Sustainability to better understand our emissions and identify opportunities for continual improvement.

As a business proudly based in Workington, with most of our team and suppliers coming from the local area, we're committed to reducing our environmental impact while continuing to support our local community.

This is an ongoing journey, but the introduction of our electric vans and charging infrastructure marks another important step towards a lower-carbon future.

The replica heraldic shield and decorative spandrels have now been successfully installed at the historic Newton Manor site in Gosforth as part of our ongoing programme of sensitive conservation works on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.

Created by Ulverston-based master stonemason David Lamb Stonemason, the replacement carvings faithfully recreate the original Gothic Revival details that had become severely weathered and cracked over time. The new St Bees sandstone elements now closely reflect how the porch would originally have appeared when first constructed in the late nineteenth century.

Particularly impressive are the intricately carved spandrels, reproduced with exceptional precision despite their delicate 70mm thickness. David’s traditional hand-tool methods and extensive heritage conservation experience have ensured every detail has been carefully respected and preserved.

Only the final pointing works now remain before this phase of conservation is complete.

It has been a privilege to help safeguard an important piece of local heritage for future generations.

Progress update from the Cumbria Youth Alliance (Buildings 1 & 2) 👷‍♂️🏗️

Great progress continues to be made at the former Chambers buildings on James Street, just off Oxford Street.

Works completed / underway:
• Acoustic panelling installed as part of compartmentalisation of the ground floor office space
• Base coat render applied to the exterior
• Finishes added around the new lift
• Kitchen fixtures installed
• Concrete bases laid for the fire escape, as well as new external steps installed
• Offices across Buildings 1 & 3 decorated, with several areas carpeted and fire doors installed (final finishes still ongoing in some areas)

This project is part of the wider refurbishment transforming the historic Chambers buildings into the future home of Cumbria Youth Alliance. It will provide a central hub for their county-wide work supporting young people and youth organisations, alongside flexible rentable office space.

Originally home to Chambers Joinery and later a Royal Mail sorting office in the 1980s, it’s brilliant to see this historic site being brought back into active use.
