Recently completed re-roofing project in York 🏠

This job involved a full strip-out of the existing roof coverings and old insulation, making way for a fresh, high-performance upgrade. We installed new 50mm insulation to improve efficiency, followed by the fitting of premium 20/20 clay tiles in a classic Flanders finish.

Lead Roof Replacement | York City Centre

This flat roof had suffered for years with internal damp, rotten timbers and split lead bays — all caused by the original sheets being installed far too large.
We stripped the roof right back, removing the failed lead and decayed boarding, and rebuilt it properly from the ground up.

✔️ Sufficient falls added to allow water to drain correctly.
✔️ New marine-grade plywood installed with penny gaps for future movement
✔️ Re-covered using Code 5 & Code 6 lead
✔️ Correct bay sizes formed to Lead Sheet Association guidelines

A solid, long-term solution finished to the standard this historic building deserves.

Recently completed re-roofing project in Heslington, York.

We’re proud to share the completion of this re-roofing project on a beautiful, traditional property located within a conservation area. In keeping with planning requirements and the character of the building, the roof was replaced on a like-for-like basis, with each slate and ridge tile carefully removed, sorted, and reinstated in its original position.

The scope of works also included upgrading the roof space insulation, as well as the replacement of three existing roof lights to the rear of the property.

Acting as Principal Contractor, JLR Roofing coordinated the project from start to finish, including associated decorative works carried out in collaboration with York-based painters and decorators, Oliver Interiors.

A fantastic example of preserving traditional craftsmanship while improving performance and longevity.

Re roofing works completed this week on three adjoining propertys in Tang Hall, York. Not only is it much easier for us to carry out re roofing projects on neighbouring propertys simultaneously, its also cost effective for our clients!

During routine maintenance at a neighbouring property, our Head of Maintenance, Jonathan Lambert, identified a large piece of loose lead hanging dangerously over an adjoining proprty in Lady Peckitts Yard, in the heart of York city centre.

This historic alleyway is a popular spot for visitors and photographers, making swift action essential to ensure public safety.

Working closely with the team at City of York Council’s Highways Department, we arranged for the passageway to be temporarily closed, installed access scaffolding, and replaced the failed bay — all within a week of the issue being identified.

This serves as an important reminder of the value of regular building inspections, particularly in busy public areas and heritage locations.

We're pleased to share some before, during, and after photos of recent roof works carried out at the historic Middleton’s Hotel in York.

Our scope of work included:

âś… Carefully removing three courses of tiles at the eaves to allow access for replacing damaged felt with a new, breathable membrane.
âś… Removing and replacing degraded leadwork with new Code 5 lead, incorporating expansion joints to accommodate the large bay sizes.
âś… Replacing failed step flashings using code 5 lead to ensure long-term weather resistance.
âś… Repairing and replacing localized sections of damaged timber using 18mm marine grade ply.

This project builds on a growing partnership with Middleton’s Hotel, where we’ve now delivered a range of roofing and construction services. We’re excited to continue supporting the property with a bi annual maintenance programme moving forward.

Re roofing works completed recently at The Q Church, York.

This project had been in the diary for over two years & we are extremely happy with the finished product! This project had it all including,

â—Ź The er****on of access scaffolding, supplied by

â—Ź Removal of the existing roof coverings. Including the spent lead gutters & lead hips.

â—Ź Timber repairs/replacement throughout the roof space, adding additional falls into the timber gutters, prior to lead being fitted.

â—Ź Lathing & felting the roofs which had previously been done using the traditional torching method- a messy strip to say the least!

â—Ź The sorting of all removed slates, identifying slates that could be re used. Surprisingly not much wastage with the slates as large slates are cut down to be used higher up.

â—Ź The replacement of all leads gutters using codes 5, 6 & 7 lead as required. Fitted of course to the highest standards, as per the guidelines provided by the .

â—Ź The re slating of the roofs using existing, salvaged slate, supplying additonal high quality reclaimed to complete works as required, fixing all slates using 38 & 50mm copper nails. Sourcing slates from the teams at & .

â—Ź The fitting of lead hips using code 5 lead throughout.

â—Ź The re felting of the small access hatch & flat roof area located at the apex of the roof.

â—Ź The re rendering of various damaged sections of the facade/parapet surrounding the building.

An outstanding effort from all involved. The works were originally anticipated to take around 16 weeks to complete, with the good weather & effort by the team involved, it was completed & signed off by our lovely clients in 12 weeks!

Re-roofing Project Completed – Woodthorpe, York

This week, we successfully completed re-roofing works at a beautiful property in Woodthorpe, York.

The project involved the removal of the existing roof coverings and deteriorated timber. The roof was then reinstated using the original Welsh slate, Complemented by expertly finished Code 5 lead hips to ensure durability and a high-quality finish.

Our partners at are now on site to dismantle the current scaffolding and re-erect it to provide safe access to the lower slate roof, visible in the attached photos.

We look foward to carrying out the lower roof elevation once access has been provided.
