A recent feature by energypress.gr highlights the BIOH2VAP project, an innovative advancing the production of renewable green hydrogen from agricultural and agro-industrial residues in Crete.

Developed by ECO HELLAS, in collaboration with Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH), Πολυτεχνείο Κρήτης - Technical University of Crete and Metacon SA the project demonstrates how locally available biomass resources can contribute to sustainable fuel production, circular economy objectives, and energy security.
The project is particularly significant for island energy resilience and energy independence. By converting locally generated agricultural waste into renewable fuels, Crete can reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels while creating a new pathway for sustainable energy production based on local resources. The project also demonstrates how islands can become pioneers in the production and utilization of renewable hydrogen.

The BIOH2VAP project, entitled "Development and operation of a pilot biomethane reforming unit for hydrogen production with simultaneous generation of value-added products", is implemented by the consortium of the four partners under the "Research and Innovation Action", co-funded by the European Union through the "Competitiveness" Program, within the framework of NSRF 2021-2027.

At ECO Hellas, we believe that renewable gases and green hydrogen are key pillars of the energy transition. BIOH2VAP showcases how innovation, research, and local collaboration can transform agricultural waste into strategic clean energy solutions for Greece and Europe.

Artificial intelligence and data are becoming part of the core infrastructure of the energy transition.
On this note, Eleni Bairami, Chairman and CEO of ECO HELLAS took part in the 1st “AI in Energy 2026” conference, organised by the Hellenic Association For Energy Economics (HAEE)) with the DSS Lab of the National Technical University of Athens, under the auspices of the City of Athens.
As she mentioned in the panel “Green Transition and Climate Change: Shaping the Resilient Energy Model of the Future,” alongside Thalia Valkouma and Apostolos Panos, environmental criteria need to be built into energy decisions through digital applications, and that Artificial Intelligence should work hand in hand with the principles of the circular economy.
At ECO HELLAS, our biogas and biomethane projects turn agricultural residues into renewable energy and soil improver. For projects like these, digital tools matter most when they help measure, track and verify environmental performance across the whole cycle.

ECO Hellas CEO Eleni Bairami participated in the Athens Energy Summit 2026, contributing to the high‑level panel:
"Placing Green Gases in the Market: Commercialization of Hydrogen, Biomethane and BioLNG.”

The panel brought together distinguished representatives from the international energy community, including George Pagoulatos (Ambassador, Permanent Delegation of Greece to the OECD), Dimitrios Triantafyllopoulos (CEO, Hellenic Hydrogen) and Ulrich Laumanns (Project Manager, GIZ), and was moderated by Dimitris Pefanis (CNN Greece).

During the discussion, it was emphasized that biogas and biomethane are not future concepts—they are fully deployable, scalable solutions that provide immediate decarbonization, enhance grid resilience and support a sustainable circular economy.

A central message of the panel was the urgent need for a robust and coherent national framework, ensuring regulatory clarity and investment confidence to align Greece with EU green‑gas targets and accelerate market development.

ECO Hellas remains committed to advancing innovative renewable‑gas projects and supporting the development of a competitive, resilient and future‑proof energy system.
