The staff of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Guyana Country Office extend our deepest condolences to the Government and People of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana following the tragic incident involving the MV Barima. We wish to extend our deepest sympathy and support to the families and loved ones of all of those people directly affected.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and the impact this tragedy has already had on the families, loved ones, and communities affected. As search and rescue efforts continue, our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives, those who remain unaccounted for, and all who are facing the pain and uncertainty of this difficult time. We also extend our support and wish strength and recovery to the survivors of this tragedy.

We convey our deepest sympathies to the people and Government of Guyana as the nation grapples with this devastating loss. We wish to acknowledge the dedication and tireless efforts of the search and rescue teams, the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard, emergency responders, medical personnel, local fisherfolk, private sector partners, and all others supporting the ongoing response.

At this time of national mourning, UNDP Guyana stands in solidarity with the people of Guyana and reaffirms its readiness to support the Government of Guyana’s response and recovery efforts as needed today and in future.

🌍✨ On the International Day of Women in Diplomacy, young leaders are helping shape the future.

Yesterday, Dhiraj Singh, Programme and Operations Management Specialist at UNDP Guyana, met with Ms Tishanna Bheer, UNFPA Guyana’s Honorary Diplomat for a Day, to discuss , , the work of and the important role young women play in driving sustainable development.

By creating spaces for dialogue, mentorship, and leadership, we can help empower the next generation of women leaders to make a lasting impact in Guyana and beyond.

⚖️ Stronger investigations + Stronger prosecutions = Justice.

Through the European Union-funded Partnership of the Caribbean and European Union on Justice ( ) Project, UNDP continues to support efforts to strengthen ’s criminal justice system and improve access to justice for all.

Recently, 70 justice sector professionals, including prosecutors, investigators, and police officers, enhanced their skills in criminal trials, appeals, evidence management, inter-agency coordination, and prosecution-ready case preparation.

Shalimar Ali-Hack SC and Director of Public Prosecutions, Diana O’Brien, Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, were among those in attendance from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. Meanwhile, Assistant Superintendent Roopnarine Ramnarine and several police inspectors were present and actively participated.

The training was designed to foster closer collaboration between and to reduce case delays, dismissals, and other inefficiencies, and ultimately backlogs within the justice sector.

Complementing these efforts, four (4) senior members of the Guyana Police Force have also benefited from regional and international training opportunities, gaining exposure to advanced investigative techniques and technologies that can strengthen criminal investigations at home.

With our partners, we're building a more efficient, responsive, and resilient justice system that upholds the rule of law and delivers better outcomes for the people of Guyana. 🇬🇾🤝🇪🇺
