As the Galway Races are once again drawing thousands to Ballybrit this week, it’s a nice reminder that Co. Galway has a long and proud racing tradition. These are pages from the official race card for the Craughwell Races, held on the Rahasane Course on Tuesday, 4th July 1911—over 115 years ago. Costing just sixpence, the programme lists the day’s runners, owners, officials and stewards, offering a fascinating snapshot of local life at a time when race meetings were among the biggest social events of the year. Looking through the names, I can’t help wondering how many local families today can trace a connection to those involved. A wonderful piece of Craughwell history and a reminder that while Ballybrit may now be the centre of attention, the excitement of race day has deep roots across the county.
