We’re delighted to share that the Benedictine Monastery at Kylemore Abbey has won the silver Judge’s Award in the category of Leisure & Tourism at the Irish Construction Excellence Awards 2026.

This award is a credit to everyone involved in the project, from design through to delivery, especially our team whose dedication and professionalism made it possible. Thanks are due to the Benedictine Community at Kylemore for their trust and collaboration throughout this unique and inspiring build.

We want to particularly highlight the Design Team: Axo Architects, IN2 Engineering, Peter F. Costello & Partners and CHH Civil and Structural Engineers whose collaboration was integral to the success of the project, as well as all the subcontractors who brought their skilled craftsmanship to bear.

Thank you to the Irish Construction Excellence Awards judges for this honour, and congratulations to all of the finalists and winners who continue to showcase the very best of Irish construction.

Final hours to vote!
Tomorrow is the last chance to have your say in Project of the Year at the Irish Construction Excellence Awards, and we’re proud to have two projects in the running.
🔹 The Benedictine Monastery at Kylemore Abbey, Galway

Both projects represent something special. From a once-in-generations monastery set within the Connemara landscape, to a landmark healthcare facility that now keeps vital screening services here in Ireland.

The winner is decided by public vote, and once voting closes, that’s it. You only get one vote per device. Here are the links:

Our very own Information Manager Caoimhe Dempsey is taking on a 10k run to raise funds for Women's Aid, an organisation doing incredible work supporting women and children affected by domestic abuse.

It’s a cause that truly matters, and we’re delighted to showcase her and encourage her efforts.

Delivering the National Cervical Screening Laboratory at The Coombe Hospital involved a lot of complexity - working within a busy, fully operational healthcare setting, where minimising disruption to patients and staff was essential.

The project required careful coordination, from installing complex building services to meeting strict performance standards for air quality, energy use, and overall efficiency, all while safely relocating specialist teams and sensitive equipment without interrupting vital services.

We’re proud to have delivered a project of this scale and complexity, and even more pleased to see it shortlisted for Public Choice – Project of the Year at the Irish Construction Excellence Awards, sponsored by the Construction Industry Federation.

Before and after of the same corridor – completely different atmosphere!

The first one is all exposed steel ribs, raw and unfinished. The second shows a place of stillness and reflection that stops you in your tracks.

This is the new Benedictine Monastery at Kylemore Abbey – one of the most unique projects we’ve had the pleasure of working on.

We’re honoured that this project has been shortlisted for Project of the Year at the Irish Construction Excellence Awards. There’s a public vote and we’d love your support.

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the RNLI, Galway Lifeboat Station. Carey Building Contractors has been a proud supporter of the Galway RNLI since it’s inception, supporting a service that embodies the courage and dedication of its volunteers, day in and day out.

Our Founder and Managing Director, Paul Carey, has been involved with the Galway RNLI from the beginning, and is currently the station’s Lifeboat Operations Manager.

We are proud of Galway RNLI’s achievements in these 30 years and we will continue to support its mission of saving lives at sea.

The Galway RNLI crew has risked their lives for the past 30 years to save those in the community, and the numbers speak for themselves.
· 816 launches in 30 years
· 498 people have been provided aid
· 74 lives have been saved

The Galway Advertiser has an excellent article on the station’s work: https://www.advertiser.ie/galway/article/150073/rnli-galway-marks-three-decades-of-heroism

The Carey Building Contractors ethos has always been to give back to the community. We strive to build lasting legacies, whether in Healthcare, Heritage, Hospitality, which is why we are thrilled to have two of them listed for public vote for Project of the Year at the Irish Construction Excellence Awards:
· Benedictine Monastery at Kylemore Abbey: https://shorturl.at/UjwmI
· National Cervical Screening Laboratory at The Coombe Hospital: https://shorturl.at/oLonj

Congratulations to Galway RNLI for 30 years of heroic service. Here’s to continuing to save lives and inspire communities for decades to come.

The new Monastery at Kylemore Abbey is the first of it's kind to be built for the Benedictine Order in Ireland in over 350 years. It forms part of a wider vision to enhance sustainability, heritage and the visitor experience across the estate. The project builds on earlier works delivered by Careys including the restoration of St. Joseph's building (student and educational facility for University of Notre Dame) and the creation of new visitor facilities.

Kylemore Abbey sits within an area of exceptional environmental and heritage significance in Connemara. Careful planning, detailed site knowledge and ongoing collaboration with the Benedictine community were essential in navigating these constraints and protecting the surrounding landscape.

The monastery itself was designed not only as a contemplative home for the nuns, but as a building that integrates seamlessly within the wider environment, balancing monastic life with the steady flow of visitors to the estate, which remains an important employer and destination in the region. It also affords community spaces as accommodation for visitors on retreat.

A unique project in every sense: shaped by heritage, guided by collaboration, and grounded in its setting.

Also a project that has been listed for the public to vote for as Project of the Year in the Irish Construction Excellence Awards. You can vote here: https://shorturl.at/UjwmI

Throughout the project, close collaboration with Axo Architects and design partners such as IN2 Engineering, CHH Civil and Structural Engineers and Peter F Costello Surveyors, ensured a cohesive and cooperative approach to design and delivery.
