Building Better: What is a U-Value?
If you’re looking at energy efficiency, insulation or BER, you’ll often come across the term U-value — but what does it actually mean?
A U-value measures how easily heat passes through a building element, such as a wall, window, roof or door.
The lower the U-value, the better the insulation.
For doors and roller shutters, a lower U-value means less heat is transferred through the door, helping a building retain heat during colder months and reduce unwanted heat gain when it’s warmer.
This is particularly important for commercial and industrial buildings, where large door openings can have a significant impact on overall energy performance.
When selecting a door, factors such as:

🔹 The size and frequency of door operation
