Microcontrollers vs. FPGAs: Which should you use?

"Have you considered using an FPGA?"

"Management believes FPGAs are too costly and take too long to develop" – this is a common belief in many projects.

But this misconception can cost companies millions. Here’s what I’ve learned:

MCUs are ideal when:

• Tasks can be handled sequentially
• Power consumption is a top priority
• You need a fast time-to-market
• Your processing is mainly linear
• Your team excels in C/C++ development

FPGAs excel when:

• Nanosecond-level timing is critical
• True parallelism is required
• Custom interfaces are needed
• Deterministic timing is essential
• You’re processing high-bandwidth data

For instance, a client might use an FPGA to process all eight camera feeds simultaneously with a 200-microsecond latency, and by the end of the month, they could recover half of their project’s schedule delay.

The surprise? The FPGA solution ends up costing less than continuing to fight the inherent limitations of the MCU.

Sometimes, the "more expensive" option actually saves time and money.

What about you?

Have you ever tried making an MCU do an FPGA’s job or vice versa?

Feel free to leave a comment!
