BHELs 1200 kV Ultra-High Voltage (UHV) transformer is a very massive achievement. The largest voltage transformers in existence today are 1100kV units built by ABBgroupnews for the Changji-Guquan UHVDC link in China .
Indias indigenous 1200 kV Ultra-High Voltage (UHV) transformer, achieving a higher voltage rating than China’s 1100 kV infrastructure.
Why This is a Massive Achievement for India.
Building equipment that can handle 1,200,000 volts is an incredible engineering challenge. At these extreme ultra-high voltages, physics gets tricky: the air itself can become conductive, massive electrical arcs can form, and the insulation required inside the transformer must be flawless.
India’s 1200 kV experimental line at the National Test Station in Bina, Madhya Pradesh, represents the highest operating voltage level for a transmission system anywhere in the world.
The technology for ultra-high voltage equipment is a closely guarded secret by the few global firms that possess it. Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) spent years developing this entirely through in-house research and development.
Shifting from standard 765 kV networks to 1200 kV allows India to transmit massive amounts of electricity from remote power-generation hubs (like massive solar and wind farms) to major cities over thousands of kilometers with drastically lower power losses.
