We hope that you all have come through Storm Austen safe and unscathed- and that your boats have done likewise! We’d like to recognise the hard work and commitment shown by our brilliant team as they helped customers prepare ahead of the storm, and made sure the boats in our care were safe and ready to weather Austen.

There have been a few unfortunate cases of boats being damaged in the various marinas and harbours around the island, and so we thought it might be helpful to create a checklist for our customers to provide a reminder on some of the very important and necessary actions now that the winds hopefully start to ease off a bit and you can go down and check on your boat.

As always, if you’re worried about anything to do with your boat or want some friendly advice, we’re here to help!

⚓️Check that your boat’s bilge float switches and pumps are working correctly. Clean debris from the bilge to prevent pump failure- gunk and random bits causing fouling is one of the most common causes we find when a pump isn't doing its job.

⚓️Clear your scuppers and deck drains of leaves, twigs, or rubbish that may have blown aboard. This will ensure that the accumulated rainwater we’ve had to endure the last few days can drain freely.

⚓️Check your mooring lines for chafe or fraying and freshen the lines up if necessary. Check over your fenders and make sure they’re still secure and at the desired height- we've seen a few fenders drifting around Elizabeth Marina this weekend unfortunately!

⚓️If you’re on a mud mooring, when it’s safe to do so get the wellies on and head down to check your ground gear (also, make sure you don’t leave a welly behind in the mud when you climb back onto the ladder- been there, done that!).

⚓️Hopefully your covers are still where they should be! Make sure water isn't pooling on them, which adds dangerous weight to the boat and can really start to weaken the fittings. Check for small tears or loose fittings which will allow water to seep underneath.

⚓️Check portholes, windows, and hatches for leaking seals or water stains. Run a dehumidifier or ventilate the cabin as best you can after the amount of rain we’ve had the last few days.

⚓️Check your engine compartment for any water ingress or any other type of fluid leakage. A period of not being used often reveals slow leaks and other issues and it's unlikely most of us having being doing much boating the last week!

Preparing for the Forecast​‌ 🌊🌧️

With strong winds forecasted from Thursday evening, continuing through Friday, we advise those closer to the coast to exercise caution during periods of strong winds. We also recommend all boat owners to take a few moments to check that their vessels and moorings are secure ahead of the deteriorating conditions as a few simple checks can make a big difference:

✅ Check mooring lines for wear and secure attachment
✅ Inspect fenders, covers and any deck equipment
✅ Secure any loose items that could be blown overboard
✅ Bail out your boat if appropriate
✅ Keep an eye on the latest weather forecasts and warnings

With a huge amount of work booked in for the rest of the year, we are now scheduling for routine inboard and outboard engine servicing with next slots available early in 2027.
