KSU expresses its profound concern in relation to the uprooting of trees in Comino, a Natura 2000 site, particularly due to the fact that such works were approved by the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA). As the authority entrusted with safeguarding Malta's natural environment, any decision permitting the removal of trees in one of the country's most ecologically sensitive areas raises serious questions about whether environmental protection is being given the priority it deserves.
Beyond the immediate visual impact on Comino's unique landscape, the removal of mature trees risks disrupting fragile ecosystems and the habitats of the species that depend on them.
These concerns are heightened by the wider context of development proposals on the island. A company has proposed for the redevelopment of the Comino hotel site into a luxury resort, including a hotel, bungalows, swimming pools and other ancillary facilities. This follows broader public concern regarding other high-profile development proposals, including the debate surrounding the proposed Manoel Island padel courts.
At a time when Malta is engaged in a public consultation on planning reform, this case reinforces the need for a planning system that places environmental protection, transparency and the public interest at the forefront of decision-making.
