The new academic year at TU/e has officially been opened! 🎓

During the opening, President Koen Janssen called for more room to educate and train engineers. Rector Silvia Lenaerts highlighted the need to reduce regulatory burden and strengthen Europe’s technological autonomy.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Tom Berendsen pointed to Brainport as an example of what is possible when government, business and knowledge institutions work together.

Three TU/e researchers, one big opportunity for collaboration across Europe 🎉

We're proud to announce the recipients of the 2026 EuroTech PhD Program grants. Three outstanding researchers have secured €360,000 in funding over four years, enabling them to recruit a PhD candidate and deepen collaboration within the EuroTech Universities Alliance.

Meet the 2026 awardees:

🔹 Lisa Maile (Electrical Engineering) – Communication-Optimized Inference in Large Language Models (COIL), with Prof. Dr. Georg Carle (Technical University of Munich, TUM)

🔹 Fabian Eisenreich (Chemical Engineering & Chemistry) – PhotoLoop: Light-Driven Circular Bio-Based Polymers, with Prof. Dr. Anders E. Daugaard (Technical University of Denmark, DTU)

🔹 Cian Scannell (Biomedical Engineering) – PRIMA-CMR: Physics-Informed Multimodal Generative AI for Personalized Contrast-Dose Reduction in Cardiac MRI, with Prof. Dr. Julia Schnabel (Technical University of Munich, TUM)

This year, all nine TU/e departments nominated a promising young researcher, resulting in nine excellent and highly diverse proposals, spanning trustworthy AI, sustainable chip design, circular materials, medical imaging, healthcare innovation, and fusion energy.

Only three projects could be selected, but the quality and ambition across the board speak volumes about the strength of TU/e's next generation of researchers and the value of the EuroTech partnership.

Solar Team Eindhoven has successfully completed the first practical tests of the solar ambulance Stella Juva in Kenya. ☀️ 🚑

During the tests, the ambulance generated more solar energy than it consumed while providing medical care, proving that Stella Juva can operate fully energy independent.

That means Stella Juva can bring healthcare to remote communities without relying on the grid or fuel. Over 800 km through challenging terrain, the solar ambulance carried and powered essential medical equipment, including an X-ray machine, ultrasound, AED and vaccine cooler.

During tests with Amref Health Africa, Stella Juva demonstrated that it could provide care to around 200 people in 2 days while remaining fully energy independent.

This shows the potential of Stella Juva to make healthcare accessible in places where electricity and reliable infrastructure are scarce. With its own energy supply and medical equipment on board, healthcare workers can examine and diagnose patients on the spot.

With this successful test, Solar Team Eindhoven takes an important first step towards the future of sustainable healthcare, and hopes to inspire companies, social organisations and governments to tackle societal challenges with innovative solutions.

"As students, we have shown what is possible when technology and social impact come together”, says team manager Mathijs van Gerven. "We hope Stella Juva is not the end point, but rather the beginning of something much bigger."

Two down, one to go 😅✅✅🥳 After the Welcome Days for internationals, and a spectacular, jam-packed Bachelor Intro, it's now time for the Master Kickoff.

Starting today, new master’s students will participate in a three-day orientation program designed to help them get to know one another, their degree program, the university, and Eindhoven’s innovative ecosystem. Activities include a Company Tour to 35 high-tech companies in the Brainport region and the Master Challenge, during which they’ll work in multidisciplinary teams on real-world problems posed by businesses and social organizations.

On Tuesday, they’ll explore the city during ‘Eindhoven by Night,’ and there will also be ‘Intro Unwind,’ featuring a varied program of games, chess tournaments, sports, music, movies, and creative workshops. The final day will focus on a friendly competition during the Interfaculty Tournament.

Find your flow during Intro Week 2026 🥳! This year, new students at the TU/e have even more opportunities to experience the Intro Week in their own way.

Last year’s successful low-stimulus evening program has been expanded under the banner of the Unwind Program: both in the daytime schedule and the evening party lineup for bachelor’s students, as well as in the evening program for master’s students and during the joint student festival Vibes.

The Bachelor Intro kicks off with a jam-packed program. Highlights include the Campus Market, Campus Quest, and a visit to the Philips Stadium, followed by the City Tour. Every evening features a different spectacular party, but for students who aren’t into that, there’s also Intro Unwind every night with games, chess tournaments, sports, music, movies, and creative workshops. 🎉

New master’s students will participate in a three-day orientation program, including a Company Tour to 35 high-tech companies in the Brainport region and the Master Challenge, during which they’ll work in multidisciplinary teams on real-world problems posed by businesses and social organizations. The Opening of the Academic Year is almost here! 🎓

On Monday, August 31, we officially kick off the new academic year. This year's theme: From Curiosity to Impact.

We're honored to welcome Minister Stientje van Veldhoven and Minister Tom Berendsen to the stage, alongside a panel featuring Eindhoven Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem, ASML CTO Marco Pieters, Simac CEO Maartje van Schagen, and MEP Bart Groothuis.

With 28 years of journalism experience, including a long career at Eindhovens Dagblad and DPG Media as reporter, editor, and team lead, Carin brings a wealth of expertise to the role. She starts on September 1.

Her ambition? To build on Cursor's strong foundation by setting the agenda, following key developments closely, and creating more impact through new and existing journalistic formats.

'Neutron vision' peers inside iron redox flow batteries to help improve battery performance. 🔋

A renewable energy future strongly relies on cheap and high-performing battery technologies. One battery option is an all-iron redox flow battery, which uses iron - a cheap, abundant, and safe material.

TU/e researchers Marina Tabuyo-Martinez, Inmaculada Gimenez-Garcia, Rémy Jacquemond, Adrian Mularczyk, and Antoni Forner-Cuenca in collaboration with Pierre Boillat from the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland studied the motion of iron in electrolytes in all-iron redox flow batteries using neutron imaging.

“Neutron imaging helps us to see things that traditional battery cycling methods just miss." So says Marina Tabuyo-Martinez, who was co-first author for the paper with Inmaculada Gimenez-Garcia.
