From October 12 to 16, we celebrated 70 years of TU/e with a full week of events on our campus.

Every day brought something new to discover. During lunch, the Curiosity Bites served up short talks on topics ranging from plasma to dementia and energy solutions. In the Spiegeltent, Cheers to Science offered talks with a musical touch and a deep dive into the future of humans, AI, and technology.

There was plenty more to explore: the Heritage Big Five in Neuron, Studium Generale’s screening of the documentary series on 70 years of TU/e, the game Totum designed for the week, the World Press Photo exhibition in Atlas, and an organ concert in the Auditorium. A few lucky students even rode home on one of the old TU/e bikes, which got a second life through a raffle. 🚲

The evenings were just as lively, with the XL Lustrum Quiz, the F*ck Up Night, and of course the Lustrum Gala in the Auditorium. On Friday, we closed the week with a big staff party. 🎉

A huge thank you to everyone who joined, organized, volunteered, and helped make this week a succes. Here’s to the next 70 years!

👏 We are very proud to announce that no fewer than four of our scientists have managed to receive an NWO Vidi grant.

Heartfelt congratulations to (left to right, top to bottom) Irene Kuling, Christopher Hojny, Tommaso Ristori, and Elisa Perrone on this great achievement and recognition of your excellent research. 🥳

An NWO Vidi grant is a personal grant of €850.000 (at most) to be spent on the research projects 🔬 proposed by the researchers. Vidi grants are aimed at researchers who have completed research projects after their PhD and have a proven track record in defining their own research.

🏡 Stay TU/ened Episode 10: Housing at TU/e

Finding a place to live as a student isn’t easy, and the future of housing comes with plenty of challenges. In this episode of *Stay TU/ened*, we explore what’s happening on and around the TU/e campus.

We hit the streets during INTRO to hear how students have found housing, talk to Jan-Willem Schellekens from Campus & Facilities about student housing plans, and meet the VIRTU/e team working on sustainable, modular homes.

We also join researcher Roel Loonen on the roof of Vertigo to learn how buildings can use energy more efficiently, visit student association Stitch Fiber Arts, and take a look at the renovation of Gemini-Zuid.

From finding a room to rethinking the homes of the future, there’s plenty to discover.

Hanneke Gelderblom and Jom Luiten have been named Best Bachelor Teacher and Best Master Teacher of 2026 👩‍🏫🧑‍🏫👏🥳. What drives them in the lecture hall?

Both lecturers work at the department of Applied Physics and Science Education. In daily practice, they have little to do with each other and mainly know each other from the corridor. During the conversation, the love for physics turns out to be a connecting factor. And keeping students motivated appears to be another common thread in both teachers' careers.

What happens when we stop hiding our failures and start sharing what we’ve learned from them? 💡

That’s exactly what our F*ck Up Night was all about during TU/e’s 70th anniversary celebrations!

Seven speakers took the stage to share honest stories about things that didn’t go as planned, guided by presenters Jolien Strous and Roy van der Meel.

Bert Meijer explored how failure can lead to new insights. Niels Deen shared unsuccessful grant applications in “Veni, Vidi, Finito,” while Peter Baltus explained why he teaches students to embrace failure. Nelly Litvak reflected on her blunders in innovative education, and Veronika Cheplygina made the case for a CV of failure. In the world of entrepreneurship, Lex Hoefsloot shared lessons from the Lightyear adventure, while Lotte Vugs explained why mishaps are essential for startups.

The evening also featured a panel discussion with Fons van der Sommen, Florencia Abinzano, and Stefan Gaillard about research waste and why failed experiments and unsuccessful research still have value.

And the audience? They loved it! One exchange student shared how he’d been taught to hide his mistakes since kindergarten. He found the evening surprising, inspiring, and deeply impressive. Others called for more, with one response summing it up perfectly: “It’s about time we did something like this!”

The message of the evening was clear: progress isn’t about getting everything right. It’s about being brave enough to share, learn, and try again. And yes, the audience wants a follow-up! 🙌

Where did student life in Eindhoven begin? 🎓

Jan Blom takes us back to the 1960s, when the Eindhoven Student Corps (ESC), the very first student association in Eindhoven, took shape. In this portrait, the former student looks back on his college years, the emergence of Eindhoven as a college town, and his special connection to the university. A personal story about the early days of student life and the growth of TU/e.

Behind some campus doors, history has been waiting for decades. ☢️

For this special occasion, doors that have been closed for years are being reopened. Radiation specialist Gilles Moerdijk takes us on a tour of two unique research facilities on campus: the former ATHENE nuclear reactor and the Cyclotron. 🔬

He explains why the reactor was shut down 50 years ago, and how the Cyclotron plays a role in medical applications that help patients every day. A piece of TU/e history that remains unknown to many.

"Sorry, not tonight." That's what John Tacken told a couple of unknown Americans at the door of the Bunker (AOR). In hindsight, they turned out to be the Red Hot Chili Peppers. 🎸

Long before the Bunker became a residential tower, it was the place where Eindhoven students gathered to party, eat, socialize, and hang out late into the night. John, a former student and former bouncer, takes us back to this iconic spot right next to the TU/e campus.

Where does a university keep its memory? 🗂️

For TU/e, a big part of the answer is Erik Geelen. As a specialist in academic heritage, he knows better than anyone what thousands of photos, albums, and documents reveal about TU/e over seven decades. In this profile, Cindy de Koning and Alfons Bruekers join him in the archives, where extraordinary stories and forgotten images are stored. 📸

A look back for our alumni, colleagues, and partners, and a reminder of the pioneering spirit that shaped our university and the Eindhoven region.
