Fast craft are evolving rapidly ⚡

Where vessels were once largely mechanical, today’s operators are demanding more automation, more electronics, and increasingly integrated systems — changing the way fast craft are designed, built and supported throughout their lifetime.

In this feature, Marine Alutech Oy Ab shares insights into how these developments are reshaping production and engineering, and why optimising propulsion with Kongsberg Maritime Kamewa waterjets remains key to achieving higher speed and operational capability.

An interesting perspective from the shipyard floor to the mission profile 🚤

Innovation in polar waters is a team effort. In a pioneering programme with British Antarctic Survey and partners, we helped capture propeller–ice interaction loads on the RRS Sir David Attenborough—combining multiple measurement streams to understand performance under representative ice conditions.

See the insights from the ice:

Kongsberg Maritime is redefining ice‑class propulsion by capturing real‑world propeller load data in Antarctic sea ice, using embedded sensor technology to improve safety, efficiency and future performance standards for polar vessels.

Fully electric RoPax is moving from “someday” to a real option for busy short‑sea routes.

Our new study highlights European corridors where battery‑electric RoPax could be both technically feasible and commercially compelling — with fully electric vessels operating in 2030–2040 projected to deliver 8–15% lower lifetime costs versus diesel alternatives, and 20–27% lower operational costs through energy and emissions‑related savings.

Routes like Dover–Calais and Tallinn–Helsinki stand out as strong candidates.

Future-ready maritime training requires more than technology alone — it requires continuous development, realism, and strong collaboration.

At the National Maritime College of Ireland - NMCI , a long-standing partnership with Kongsberg Maritime has helped evolve their simulation environment to meet the changing demands of the maritime industry.

Through a comprehensive retrofit project, NMCI has modernised its bridge and engine room simulation capabilities while building on its existing infrastructure — enhancing realism, operational training, and integrated crew exercises for the next generation of seafarers.

Our new Engine Room Simulator (ERS) model based on Höegh Aurora (CO₂ Pilot) has received a DNV simulator statement of compliance — giving training centres a verified, high-fidelity platform for advanced learning.

For operators and training providers, this means realistic, repeatable training on complex, integrated vessel systems in a safe environment.

Crews can build operational understanding, practise critical scenarios, and gain confidence in how advanced automation, propulsion optimisation and energy systems work together — supporting safer operations and smoother vessel introduction.

Q1 2026 marked an important milestone for Kongsberg Maritime — our first results as an independent listed company.

Strong newbuild activity, a robust backlog, and continued demand for energy‑ and cost‑efficient solutions defined the quarter.

For our customers, this means stability, continuity and the ability to plan with confidence — across vessel segments and market cycles.

Our strategy is unchanged: deliver technology and support that stand up to real‑world operations, over the full vessel lifecycle.

What keeps someone in the same company for nearly two decades?

For Vegard, it comes down to growth, trust — and a genuine sense of pride in where we’re headed 🚀

Since joining in 2008 as a DP service engineer, he’s taken on a wide range of roles — from project management in large integrated deliveries to working with Emerging Solutions, where collaboration and complexity go hand in hand.

Today, what drives him most is how we learn together.
Through dialogue-based workshops, peer learning, and creating a culture where it’s safe to say “I’m unsure”, Vegard is passionate about building stronger learning environments across the organization.

The photos are from a recent book launch, where he shared insights on knowledge management and learning cultures 📚

We’re proud to share some exciting news 🚢

Kongsberg Maritime has been awarded a contract to deliver advanced bridge simulators to the French Naval Academy, École navale, in Lanvéoc ⚓

With four full-mission K-Sim Navigation simulators and additional training units, cadets and officers will be able to train in highly realistic scenarios — building teamwork, situational awareness and decision-making skills before heading out to sea.

Because when it comes to maritime operations, preparation makes all the difference.
