We were established in 1996 when private oil companies were pretty much unheard of. It was very much the “wild frontier” and the possibilities seemed endless. To founder, Andrew Stewart, it represented freedom — a chance to break away from the restrictions imposed on the market by a select few “major” companies. Ash is one of the people behind the products that end up in your gear.

Our production systems and equipment keep things ticking over, but it's the hands and eyes like his, with decades' worth of experience, that make sure every batch comes out exactly as it should.

It's not something you can learn from a user manual. You get it from someone who has been doing it, and doing it well, for a very long time.

Back in 1994, Andrew Stewart and his good mate Trevor Hockenhull were just a couple of racers chasing performance, bringing race fuels to New Zealand because they believed Kiwis deserved access to the same high-quality products being used overseas. A few years later, they added lubricants to the mix and made it official by setting up shop, and by “shop,” we mean Trevor’s garage, with stock crammed into a self-storage unit down the road.

That was the whole company. Two mates, a borrowed garage, and a stubborn belief that this country didn’t need to rely on global corporate giants to get a properly made lubricant.

Although Trevor sadly isn’t here to see what it has become, what he and Andrew started never slowed down. Thirty years on, it has grown into the largest privately-owned independent lubricant supplier in the country; five branches, our own plant, our own trucks on the road, and it’s still 100% Kiwi owned.

Andrew’s still here, still at it, and still pours that same belief into every batch that leaves the door.

Not a bad innings for an idea that started in a garage. We’re pretty proud of where it’s come from, and where it’s headed.

When Vertex launched in 1996, we were a focused lubricant operation serving a specific market. The identity reflected that. Over the next 28 years, something different happened: the range expanded, the infrastructure grew, and the customer base scaled to include the kind of organisations that aren't easy to earn.

The new brand presence we've launched reflects what Vertex has actually become: New Zealand’s most technically rigorous, most broadly ranged, and most supply-certain lubricant operation. Vertex Lubricants has relaunched with a new brand identity, same 100% New Zealand ownership and the same technical standards we’ve held since 1996.

We stock the widest range of lubricants and oils in New Zealand. We own our warehouses, our trucks, and our logistics chain. And when you call us, you speak to someone who knows your fleet, not a call centre script.

It didn’t start in a boardroom.

Vertex was built by people who understand what happens when a machine fails under pressure, and refused to accept it as inevitable. Andrew Stewart founded Vertex in 1996 with a background in motorsport and a straightforward belief: performance is a discipline, not a marketing claim.

Early involvement in motorsport shaped the way we think about lubrication, exact formulation, exact specification, and exact application. Those standards were refined in competition, then scaled and applied to industries where downtime has real consequences.

Almost 30 years later, that’s still the standard we hold ourselves to. Every batch. Every drop.

This is why we exist.
