Well, Warbirds Over Wanaka 2026 is over for another year.
Can’t say I saw much of it other than what I saw while flying the WACO in the Classic’s display. (Anybody get a photo?)
The rest of the time was spent trying to sort the brake issue on the Yak-7B. On taxying back after Thursday’s practice Ryan lost the brakes and we were unable to rectify the problem.
We toiled hard and had a lot of help over the next 4 days and it just goes to show that the aeroplanes are only a minor part of the show.
Many thanks to all who assisted, but particularly me old mate Alistair Marshall and Callum Smith at Twenty24 for the use of their facilities and tools!

Great work team!
After being thwarted by a brake issue yesterday we were able to take advantage of a weather window and finally get wind over the wings for Yak-7B ZK-YKB this morning.
Two flight completed and I am happy to say all is in order with nothing of significance to report.
Mark Legarra’s engine performed flawlessly and all systems work as advertised.
She sounds like one hell of a beast so don’t let her portly looks fool you!
More test flying once this weather system passes and the cowls are painted!

It breathes again!
After a concerted effort by a team of volunteers over the weekend we were able to fit the prop this morning and carry out initial engine runs this afternoon.
All seems good so far!

You're all probably wondering what the status of the Yak-7B is!?
Well, in the time honoured tradition of New Zealand airshows, she is going down to the wire!
Seriously though, we received the Special Category - Experimental C of A two weeks ago and have spent the time since getting all the fairings and other panels that were not yet painted sorted out.
Had hoped this would be done a week ago, but the devil is in the detail.
Most things are painted now and things are going together for the final time and we hope to commit aviation early to mid next week.

And we’re pretty pleased….
I was a bit worried she was going to be a bit of a porker but we’ve shed 150kg from the weight recorded in the US logs.
Surprisingly, in a great way, she is only 120kg heavier than Full Noise and the Empty CG is only 10mm aft of Full Noise’s.

Here's a neat little project for the guys at JEM Aviation.
Its a 2:1 gearbox to fit a CJ-6 air compressor to the back of an Allison V12 for a Yak fighter.
It bolts to the rear of the engine and eliminates the need for an electric compressor to run all the pneumatic systems such as flaps and undercarriage.
