Recycling Needs Industry Support to stop the headlines

A $40 million recycling facility just went into administration without processing a single kilogram of soft plastic. It's been in the news all week, another tragedy for our industry, in Australia and abroad.

The real problem isn't collection or processing capacity. It's demand. Too many businesses aren't choosing recycled products first. You aren't really recycling unless you're buying products made from recycled materials.

For over four years in New Zealand and more than three years in Australia, we've turned soft plastics, food & beverage cartons and other hard to recycle waste into carbon negative building products. But it only works if they get specified, ordered and installed on real projects. Getting paid to take waste to recycle doesn't pay the bills, we all need to sell our end product.

Not more capacity. Real demand.

𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗶𝘁𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀.

Green Star Interiors closes to new registrations on 18 September 2026. Every fitout project registering from 1 October must use Green Star Fitouts, the first Green Star tool built with circularity as a core requirement instead of an optional credit.

We built saveBOARD around the belief that recycling only works when there's real demand for what gets made from the recycled material. We’ve even made it super easy with an online carbon calculator you can use linked to our EPDs and our saveBOARD Returns guide to add into your spec. 🌱 We're featured in Woolworths' 2026 Impact Report!

Since February 2024, Woolworths' soft plastics recycling network has grown from 5 stores to over 700. With customers returning 50 million+ pieces of soft plastic, kept out of landfill for good.

That plastic is being turned into saveBOARD building materials, now used in the fit-out of 170+ Woolworths supermarkets. It's proof that when a retailer creates real demand for recycled materials (not just collects the waste), circularity actually works 💚

We've already done the R&D. The next step is a prototype store.

This saveBOARD panel is custom coloured to match Coles red, photographed next to their trolley bay, counter and signage. It's a real product, already running across 200+ Woolworths stores and 300+ KFC fitouts.

A customer told us this week: "I'm delighted. The faster I get this done, the faster I move on to the next job."

We cut 38 sheets at 2585mm plus 12 custom widths, from 190mm up to 1115mm, exactly what his job needed. No full sheets cut down on site, no wasted offcuts, no wasted spend.

Kit of parts, no guesswork.

The first thing Woolworths ever saw from us was made from their own rubbish.

Feb 2022, no contacts there, so we made a board from their own BRICKS packaging (long before OOSHIES) and food packaging from home, cut it into panels, and posted it to the leader of Woolworths 360 in Australia. That one parcel got us in front of the right people, which then led to a Sydney meeting, first trials as ceiling tiles, then self-checkouts and trolley bays. Two years of trials later, we were part of their design spec.

Supermarket soft plastics into nursery planter boards.
The same soft plastics you drop off at the supermarket are being turned into a waterproof panel that hold seedlings of plants before they go on sale.

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝘂𝘆 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀.

Our 2Faced board is made from 100% recycled post-consumer soft plastic, no added glues or chemicals, is now stocked in 25 Bunnings Warehouse New Zealand stores across NZ. Every board diverts about 12.5kg of plastic from landfill.

"𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙮𝙘𝙡𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙨𝙚𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙪𝙨𝙚." That is circular economy in action, but only works if people buy the product to create the circle.

𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗿: The material itself creates the colour, sometimes using a client's own old marketing collateral, so their brand colour and bits of logos show through naturally (see the Powerco and Meridian walls).

𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗺: a solid colour selected off our colour wheel, melts into the surface for a clean, consistent finish regardless of what's underneath. Think Woolworths emerald green, RELAY forest green, KFC black, saveBOARD White Noise.

Over the next 20 years: 72M+ passengers a year, a new integrated domestic terminal, billions in construction.

Someone still has to choose what all of that gets built from.

We're already part of it. Our custom Forest Green Exposed Internal Wall and Ceiling Lining, made from 99% recycled soft plastics and food & beverage cartons, already lines 5 RELAY convenience stores at Sydney Airport, a fit-out we delivered with Lagardère Travel Retail group.

Small stores inside a huge plan, but proof of what's possible when retailers choose circular materials over virgin ones.

Recycling only works when people actually buy what's made from it. Sydney Airport just signed up for 20 more years of construction. We want more of it built from what's already sitting in Australia's recycling systems.
