𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱 $𝟮𝟳𝟬 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲.

The Productivity Commission says we should use more recycled materials in it. The Commission's circular economy report, released in January this year, names the built environment as the number one priority sector for circular economy reform in Australia.

One of its headline findings: 𝙧𝙚𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙡𝙮 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙜𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙗𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙡𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙘𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙡𝙨.

This is the tightrope saveBOARD has been navigating since we started in Australia more than three years ago. Specifiers want to use recycled content. The procurement rules and material specifications often make it harder than it should be.

$270 billion is a lot of building. If even a fraction of that spend prioritises recycled content, the demand for materials like ours changes significantly, which underpins investment and innovation in the sector.

The Commission also found that Australia's overall progress towards a circular economy has been slow. What it doesn't capture is the commercial case already being made by companies building circular products into the market right now.

We are one of those companies.

I made one yesterday, except from your recycled packaging.

16 seconds from food & beverage cartons + soft plastics as our raw materials to betterBRACE Rigid Air Barrier on a wall. Shredded, laid on our baking paper, board being formed, cut to length, stencil sprayed, magically its installed on a building.

We need some light entertainment on a Friday afternoon; however the process is happening right now.

From 1 July, Australian companies must report the carbon in their supply chains. That includes the walls of their buildings which can make up to 10% of the embodied carbon in a retrofitted building.

I've been saying this for five years. Last week, the world's biggest waste company finally said it on stage.

"This only works if there is demand for the product."

That was the COO of Waste Management at the NWRA Waste Leadership Summit in Washington last week. WM has invested $1.4 billion in recycling infrastructure since 2022. They can sort more material types than ever. The quality has never been cleaner.

And they still said: none of it works without consistent, committed buying from brands. Not sporadic. Consistent.

This is the thing the circular economy keeps dancing around. Recycling is a supply chain. You can have the best sorting facilities on earth. If there is no committed buyer for what comes out the other end, the material goes to landfill.

saveBOARD exists on the demand side of that equation. Every board we make is a permanent, scalable buyer of post-consumer waste. Not a one-off. An ongoing offtake.

Five years ago, I thought we were building a building product company. We are actually building a circular economy business, where we provide solutions to big brands and create products they want to use in their supply chain.

Australia's Productivity Commission told government in January that outdated building standards are blocking recycled materials from $270 billion in public infrastructure.

saveBOARD is ready. The product is proven. Now the rules just need to catch up.

Hopefully those holding the pen can make the changes, to help pull through demand of recycled products to save this valuable material from landfill.

Our team are participating in Futurebuild Australia and are showcasing new product updates. Complete with samples and freebies on the table to take home.

One participant got so excited about our Exposed Internal Lining that they went and brought back the developer who was waiting to see them.

The developer asked for a business card and ended up with samples and hopefully the start of a sustainable business relationship.

This is how specification actually works. Not through catalogues or spec sheets sitting in a library. Through one person turning to another and saying, "you need to see this."

Exposed Internal Lining changes the character of a space. What's usually hidden becomes part of the building's identity: raw, honest, and considered. It costs less than traditional finishes once you take into account the total installed cost (material + all sub-trades and time saving).
