As some of you may be aware through the news media today, New Zealand's power system is facing a shortage of power generation to meet expected demand tomorrow morning. You can read more about the situation here:
https://www.transpower.co.nz/news/new-zealanders-asked-reduce-power-use-tomorrow-morning
To get through this little period, there are some relatively simple things we can all do to help reduce the potential impact of this situation on ourselves, our communities and homes and businesses across the country.
If you're one of our customers without your own generation, we encourage you to think about non-essential electricity use that you can turn down or off between 6.30am and 9.30am tomorrow morning. This might include reducing or avoiding things like EV charging, electric water heating, laundry and dishwasher use during this time.
If you're one of our customers with generation or storage, we encourage you to also think about what non-essential electricity use you're able to reduce or avoid between sunrise and 9.30am tomorrow. This will have the impact of creating as much generation as possible that can be shared with members of the communities you're a part of. And, as you can see from above, the NZ power system will be short of generation. So, every little bit that can be pushed back into the network during this time can help keep everyone's lights on.
While this is a potentially serious situation for the NZ power system, there is also no need to be fearful, nor to avoid keeping ourselves and our families warm. If we all do our bit, our communities and the country as a whole can get through just fine, our lights will stay on and the impact on our wallets and power system emissions will be kept to a minimum.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries.

New Zealand is facing a potential shortfall of electricity supply between 7am and 9am tomorrow morning because of an unseasonal cold snap and low wind generation.
