We've talked a lot about home ventilation over the last couple of weeks. There's a good reason for that.

It's one of those things that's hard to appreciate until you've experienced it. Customers who've had a Lossnay or Daikin VAMS installed often tell us the same thing - they didn't realise how much the air quality in their home was affecting them until it changed.

We know times are tough right now. And for a lot of Wellington and Wairarapa households, investing in a home ventilation system (as much as it would make a difference ) might not be in the budget just yet.

If you're not in a position to install a ventilation system, here are 3 things you can do in the meantime that will help:

🪟 Open windows when you can - even 15 minutes of cross-ventilation after a shower or while cooking makes a difference. Let the moisture out before it builds up.

💨 Use your extractor fans - in the kitchen and bathroom, every time. And leave them running for a few minutes after you're done, not just while you're cooking or showering.

🚿 Dry washing outside where possible - drying clothes indoors is one of the biggest contributors to moisture build-up in a home. We know this is easier said than done during a Wellington or Wairarapa winter - but getting washing outside on the drier days makes a difference.

So if wiping condensation off your windows every morning isn't normal - what actually fixes it?

It comes down to getting the moisture out of your home and replacing it with fresh, filtered air. Sounds simple, but a lot of homes just aren't set up to do that on their own.

That's where a home ventilation system comes in.

A good system works continuously in the background - pulling stale, damp air out and bringing fresh air in. And the clever bit? Modern systems recover the heat from the outgoing air before it leaves, so you're not sacrificing warmth to get fresher air.

Russell's Google review we shared on Tuesday got us thinking - and it reminded us of something we wish more homeowners knew.

Wiping condensation off your windows every morning isn't normal. Neither is that musty smell that creeps in over winter, or discovering mould in the corners of rooms you use every day.

It's incredibly common in Wellington and Wairarapa homes - but common doesn't mean you have to live with it.

It's been a great week of solar chat and it's clearly got a few people thinking.

Before we close out the week, there's one more myth worth busting.

Myth: Solar is too expensive to be worth it.

The upfront cost puts a lot of people off - and that's understandable. But as Frances Cook shared this week, her return on investment sits at 15.6% - higher than the average sharemarket return - with a payback period of around 6.5 years.

It's worth noting too - Frances describes those numbers as a conservative estimate. If power prices keep rising (and all the signs suggest they will), the savings go up and the payback time gets smaller.

And if the upfront cost is still a sticking point - it's worth knowing that most major New Zealand banks offer green loans or sustainability loans specifically for home energy upgrades like solar. Low-cost financing means you don't have to find the full amount upfront.

The one thing we hear most often from customers after we've installed solar? Their only regret is not doing it sooner.

Every home is different and the numbers will vary depending on your situation. But it's worth having the conversation before writing it off.

Following on from Frances Cook - Journalist's solar post we shared on Tuesday - let's bust a pretty common myth, especially for those of us living with Wellington and Wairarapa's famously fickle weather.

Myth: Solar panels don't work in cloudy weather.

Not true. Solar panels generate power from daylight, not direct sunshine. A grey Wellington or Wairarapa day won't stop your panels from doing their job.

There are of course a few things worth considering - which way your roof faces, the angle and whether you've got a clear unbroken run of roof to work with. But as Frances says, a good installer can help you figure all of that out.
