Earlier this week we talked about Asthma Awareness Week and why the air inside your home matters more than most people realise.

A lot of older Wellington and Wairarapa homes were built without much thought given to airflow. They're cold in winter, they trap moisture and they don't shift stale air out efficiently. Over time that builds up - and you feel it, especially if anyone in your home has asthma or a respiratory condition.

A few things that genuinely help:

✔️ A ventilation system that brings fresh, filtered air in and pushes damp, stale air out.

✔️ A heat pump that keeps temperatures consistent - cold homes hold more moisture.

✔️ Reducing condensation, which is often the first sign that your home isn't breathing properly.

None of this needs to be complicated. Sometimes it starts with a conversation about what you're noticing in your home and what your home actually needs.

If you've got questions about ventilation or air quality, feel free to get in touch. We're always happy to help point you in the right direction.

You'll know by now that we talk a lot about the air inside your home. This week feels like an especially important time to bring it up again.

This week is Asthma Awareness Week - and the numbers are sobering. 1 in 5 New Zealanders live with a respiratory disease. 1 in 8 children have asthma. It's the third most common cause of death in this country.

Damp, poorly ventilated homes don't just feel uncomfortable. They can make breathing harder, trigger asthma symptoms and contribute to the kind of ongoing health issues that affect hundreds of thousands of Kiwi families.

Better ventilation. Warmer, drier air. Fewer pollutants and allergens cycling through your living spaces. It won't fix everything - but it makes a real difference to the people living in those homes, especially the little ones.

What's the inside air temperature at your place?

Did you know the indoor temperature in the average New Zealand home in winter is 16 degrees? Which is below the World Health Organisation's recommended minimum of 18 degrees, and ideally 21 degrees if babies or elderly people live in the house.

This one's worth busting - because for a lot of Wellington and Wairarapa homes, switching away from gas is one of the better financial decisions you can make.

A heat pump's efficiency is measured by its coefficient of performance, or COP. A good heat pump delivers 3kW or more of heat for every 1kW of electricity it uses. Gas heating can't compete with that - and once you factor in the fixed monthly cost of staying connected to the gas network, the numbers start looking pretty uncomfortable (especially right now).

For a lot of our customers, ditching gas altogether has made a noticeable dent in their monthly bills.

If you're still running gas and wondering whether a heat pump stacks up - we're happy to talk it through.

A few weeks ago we asked if you'd spare 2 minutes to leave us a Google review. A number of you did just that - and we're really grateful. It genuinely means a lot to the whole team.

If you missed it, or you've worked with us since and haven't had a chance yet, we'd love to hear from you.

Reviews help other Wellington and Wairarapa homeowners and businesses feel confident about who they're inviting into their space. And for a local team like ours, word of mouth is everything.

Whether we helped you with an installation, maintenance visit or repair last month or a few years back - if we did a good job, we'd love for you to say so. It takes about 2 minutes and it makes a real difference.

With the wild weather hitting Wellington right now, we want to share some practical advice for anyone whose heat pump outdoor unit has been affected by flooding.

A couple of things to know:

If you notice water pooling around your outdoor unit, turn it off at the isolator straight away and keep it off. Don't be alarmed by condensation on the unit itself - that can be normal when your system is running in heating mode. It's rising floodwater you need to watch.

Next to your outdoor unit you'll find an Electrical Isolation Box. Keep an eye on water levels around it. If water is rising close to that box, isolate the unit at your switchboard and leave it off until a qualified technician (🙋‍♂️) has assessed it.

If your unit has been partially or fully submerged, don't turn it back on - even once the water has receded. Water and electrical components don't mix, and it needs to be checked over before it's safe to run again.

We're here to help. If you need advice or want someone to assess your system, get in touch today 👇

In heating mode, set the louvres to point downward. Cold air sits low in a room, so directing warm air downward helps it circulate properly and can heat your space faster.

Most people leave it on auto and wonder why one corner of the room never quite warms up.

Give it a go, and let us know what you think...

Every job comes with its own set of challenges - and how a team handles those is what really counts. We're proud of the crew for this one.

Thanks for taking the time to leave us a Google review, Louise 🙏

If you missed Sunday's post - or you're wondering what we meant when we said "check your outdoor unit is off the ground and on brackets" - this photo says it better than we can.

Rust and corrosion like this builds up when a unit sits directly on the ground - no feet, no brackets, nothing between the base and the moisture and debris that accumulates over time. It's one of those installation shortcuts that doesn't show up immediately, but it will show up eventually.

Worth a quick look this week if you haven't already. If your outdoor unit is sitting flat on the ground, it's worth getting someone to take a look before winter.

And no - this unit wasn't installed by us.

The brand on the box matters. So does the team that installs it.
