Tackling Decades of PFAS Accumulation at a Municipal Waste Site

A municipal waste facility in Sweden, in operation since the 1950s, faces one of the most persistent contamination challenges in the sector: PFAS accumulated in its leachate over decades. Leachate from the site is collected in several ponds and pumped onward for treatment, and the operator needed a way to address these compounds before the water reaches the municipal wastewater treatment plant.

In collaboration with the municipality, Mellifiq has deployed a pilot-scale treatment plant at the existing site to evaluate an advanced multi-stage purification process. The pilot draws contaminated water from the collection ponds and treats it ahead of the final municipal stage, with the facility handling up to 80,000 tons of leachate annually.

The primary focus of the treatment train is the removal of PFAS, while the process is also expected to reduce suspended organic matter and heavy metals. The concept is based on a proven multi-technology configuration combining AOP and multiple filtrations steps. Together, physical separation, advanced oxidation, and targeted adsorption act in sequence to deliver high treatment performance and efficient PFAS reduction.

The pilot will include controlled test runs and performance analysis, generating the data needed to support the design and optimization of a future full-scale implementation at the site.

We’ve delivered and commissioned a containerized treatment plant for the municipality, a temporary solution at a viaduct where groundwater pumped from beneath the industrial railway track contains chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAH), suspended matter, heavy metals, PFAS and micropollutants — impacted by industrial and infrastructure activity along the railway track. 🏗️

Mellifiq Deploys Mobile System to treat PFAS, CAH, SS, Heavy Metals and Micropollutants

Mellifiq has been entrusted by a municipality in southern Sweden to deliver a temporary water treatment facility at a local viaduct. The system is dedicated to managing elevated concentrations of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAH), suspended matter, heavy metals, PFAS and micropollutants in groundwater pumped from a nearby underpass beneath an industrial railway track.

The contamination consists of a complex mix of pollutants typically found in groundwater impacted by industrial and infrastructure activity, all of which must be effectively reduced before the treated water is safely discharged to the local stormwater network.

To address these contaminants, Mellifiq has engineered a compact, fully containerized multi-stage process designed for a flow rate of 10 m³/h. The process combines aeration for iron precipitation, sand filtration and fine particle separation using our Water Maid solutions, and final polishing through granular activated carbon adsorption to secure compliance with the strict discharge limits.

Mellifiq Scales Up Nodora System for Advanced Electronics Manufacturer in California

Mellifiq is proud to announce the delivery of a new Nodora system to a leading electronics and equipment manufacturer in California. Building on a successful collaboration established several years ago, this latest project represents a significant scale-up in capacity, from 5,400 m3/h up to 25,000 m3/h.

The Nodora system is well-suited for treating advanced process gas streams. In this case, the system is applied to gases produced by the electron beam process, handling high loads of hydrogen fluoride (HF), VOCs, and nitrogen oxides (NOx) while also neutralizing byproducts such as ozone. This ensures a safe and controlled working environment and protects sensitive equipment.

This delivery once again demonstrates the scalability and modularity of Mellifiq's Nodora concept. By handling higher flow rates and evolving process needs, Mellifiq delivers flexible solutions for customers in advanced machinery and electronics.

Michelin Star Chef Opens New Restaurant in Stockholm – Mellifiq to Install RENA Kitchen for Exhaust Air Treatment

The restaurant will center around an open-fire grill concept, placing high demands on kitchen exhaust treatment due to smoke, grease, and odor generation.

Grill-based cooking environments present unique technical challenges, with continuous exposure to high temperatures and intensive airflows containing grease particles.
