Our National Day celebration at HQ looked a little different this year.

We had our first-ever Sunray Toy Buffet, with brand new and pre-loved toys up for grabs. One simple rule: contribute an amount and take as many as you like. Together with our subcontractors and subsidiaries, our Sunrayians raised close to $4,000 in just 1.5 hours, supporting Ray of Hope campaigns and Kayson, a 12-year-old boy undergoing liver treatment.

High tea was also served by youths on the autism spectrum from Kopi Teh Makan, an initiative by Ray of Hope and The Green And Purple Movement, giving them a space to interact, build confidence and put their skills into practice.

A big thank you to Ray of Hope and The Green & Purple Movement for joining us and making the celebration even more meaningful.

We love trying new things at Sunray, but it always comes back to bringing people together, sharing some joy and doing good along the way.

Happy National Day, Singapore! 🥳🥳

Three months ago, some of us couldn't even serve a pickleball.

When Allkin Singapore launched their very first Rally for Good Charity Pickleball Match, 13 Sunrayians stepped up, many of them complete beginners. From April onwards, the team met every week after work to practice, learn, and most importantly, enjoy the journey together.

This weekend, we sent two teams into the competition with no expectations, simply hoping to have fun and support a good cause. To our surprise, one of our teams battled through four rounds and finished in the Top 8 out of 28 teams. More than the result, we're proud of the journey. Watching colleagues encourage one another, improve week after week, and step out of their comfort zones made the experience truly memorable.

Sunray was honoured to support this meaningful initiative as one of the event's sponsors. Giving back to the community has always been close to our hearts, and we're grateful to have contributed while sharing this unforgettable experience with our teammates and fellow participants.

A huge thank you to Allkin Singapore for organizing such a meaningful event, to our 13 players for their commitment over the past three months, and to everyone who came down to support us.

Here's a little video of our journey from our very first practice in April to an unforgettable weekend. 💛

On the last day of the June school holidays, our Sunray team spent the day with SG Cares Center @ Kreta Ayer and New Hope Community Services for a learning journey.

We first visited New Hope at Margaret Drive to learn more about the work they do with families and individuals experiencing homelessness in Singapore. After that, we met the children under New Hope at Jalan Kukoh and then headed to Kidszania together. We watched them become firefighters, police, chefs and doctors for the day.

More than an outing, it was a chance to remind every child that they are valued and capable of dreaming big. It also gave our staff and their own children the opportunity to volunteer together, fostering kindness, empathy and compassion through shared experiences. Sometimes, our presence and encouragement can mean more than any donation.

A huge thank you to the team at SG Cares and New Hope Community Services for the incredible work you do every day, giving families and individuals a safe place to rebuild and start again. Sunray is proud to play a small part in your journey, and we'll continue doing what we can to support the community.

The True Strength of a Company

Some companies are just a name before you visit them. After you leave, they become a mirror that reflects what a company truly is.

This time, the destination of the Entrepreneurs' Association company visit was Sunray Woodcraft Construction Pte Ltd, a Singapore company that has been deeply rooted in the building and interior fit-out industry for 38 years. Founder and CEO Connie Wu personally welcomed us and openly shared the company's journey; from having nothing in the beginning to becoming a respected leader in the industry today.

That confidence wasn't something she was born with. It was earned through years of perseverance.

Few people would imagine that the company now capable of delivering iconic projects such as Marina Bay Sands, Changi Airport and Jewel Changi Airport began as nothing more than a small carpentry workshop.

There was no influential background, no strong network, and no capital. What they did have were hardworking hands and an unwillingness to give up.

Starting as a small subcontractor specializing in carpentry, Sunray gradually expanded into an integrated company providing design, manufacturing and project ex*****on. Over 38 years, the company steadily moved from the industry's sidelines to its centre. The journey was never easy, but it was solid, purposeful and built on resilience.

Under Connie Wu's leadership, Sunray completed the crucial transformation from being a subcontractor to becoming a main contractor. This was not just a business decision, but a shift in mindset from merely executing work for others to becoming a builder capable of leading projects independently.

What impressed me most during the visit wasn't the impressive portfolio of completed projects, but Connie's calmness when speaking about difficult times. She neither glorified the past nor avoided discussing the struggles. She simply said that the hardest periods were often when the company experienced its greatest growth.

Sunray's transformation did not happen overnight through one major strategic move. It came from continuously building capabilities with every project and choosing responsibility during every crisis. From carpentry to renovation, from renovation to integrated construction, and from local projects to regional competitiveness, every step represented the strengthening of the company's overall capabilities, not merely business expansion.

That made me ask myself, and everyone present:

Are we simply "running a business," or are we truly "building a company"?

The two may sound similar, but they lead in very different directions.

You rarely see a company's true character during smooth times. It is during crises that everything becomes clear.

When the pandemic struck, the construction industry almost came to a standstill. Many companies immediately focused on cutting costs and laying off staff to protect themselves. There is nothing inherently wrong with that; it is a normal business instinct.

However, Sunray made a decision that was perhaps less "commercially rational."

They chose to protect their people first.

They provided additional living support for affected employees. Management maintained transparent communication instead of leaving the team to struggle with uncertainty. Even more remarkably, they led teams to participate in the construction of national quarantine facilities. At the most difficult moment, they chose to move toward the challenge instead of avoiding it.

Employees were willing to stand alongside the company during that period, not because of salary or contracts, but because of trust.

And that trust was built little by little over many years.

This, to me, is where the true strength of a 38-year-old company lies.

After leaving Sunray, one thought stayed with me:

Buildings can be copied. Technology can be replicated. Capital can be raised. Projects can be won.

But one thing is extremely difficult to imitate:

The trust and sense of belonging that a company builds over decades with its people.
