Positive Material Identification (PMI) is often discussed as a compliance requirement, but in practice, it’s a reliability and risk-management tool.

When alloy materials are installed incorrectly — whether during fabrication, maintenance, or turnaround work — the consequences may not appear immediately. The issue usually surfaces later through corrosion, cracking, or premature component failure under service conditions.

That’s why PMI matters in high-risk industrial environments. Methods like X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES) help verify material chemistry before assets are returned to service, supporting mechanical integrity programs and documented quality assurance processes.

For plant managers, engineers, and inspection teams, the value of PMI is straightforward: reducing uncertainty about what is actually installed in critical systems.

We recently published a practical overview of why PMI plays an important role in safety, compliance, and long-term asset reliability across industrial operations.

In the field, “good enough” welding can become a very expensive problem. A small crack. Incomplete fusion. Porosity that gets overlooked during fabrication.

At first, it may not seem critical. The job gets signed off, production moves forward, and schedules stay on track.

But under real operating conditions—pressure, vibration, heat cycles, load stress—small weld defects can turn into leaks, failures, shutdowns, and serious safety risks.

That’s why inspection standards matter.

At IIA Field Services, we’ve seen firsthand what happens when quality slips or inspections are rushed. Our job isn’t to slow projects down—it’s to help prevent avoidable failures before they impact people, production, or profitability.

Because in this industry, “good enough” rarely stays good enough for long.

What does a Level II NDT Technician actually do day-to-day? It’s more than running tests.

Out in the field, Level II techs are:
• Setting up and calibrating equipment for methods like UT, MT, PT, and RT
• Interpreting results—not just collecting data
• Making judgment calls that impact safety, uptime, and compliance
• Working in real-world conditions—heat, wind, tight spaces, and active job sites
• Documenting findings clearly so engineers and operators can act with confidence

This role carries real responsibility. You’re often the last line of defense between a minor issue and a major failure.

It also requires more than experience:
✔️ Certifications (ASNT Level II or equivalent)
✔️ Strong attention to detail
✔️ The ability to work independently in the field
✔️ A mindset focused on safety and accuracy

For the right person, it’s a career that builds skill, trust, and respect over time. If you’re looking for work that matters—this is it.

Skipping NDT doesn’t save money. It just delays the bill.

We’ve seen it play out too many times in the field—
• A small indication goes unchecked
• A weld defect gets missed
• An inspection gets pushed to “next shutdown”

Then comes the real cost:
Unplanned downtime.
Production losses.
Emergency repairs under pressure.
And in the worst cases—safety incidents and regulatory exposure.

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) isn’t a line item to cut. It’s a control measure that protects your people, your assets, and your schedule.

The reality? The cost of inspection is predictable. The cost of failure never is.

Hardness testing doesn’t get much attention—but it should. In the field, it’s one of the fastest ways to confirm whether a material will actually perform the way it was intended. Not on paper. In service.

A quick hardness check can help verify:
• Proper heat treatment
• Material consistency
• Changes from service conditions (like work hardening or thermal exposure)

It’s also one of the few methods that gives immediate insight without cutting, removing, or shutting anything down.

For operations and maintenance teams, that matters. Because the question isn’t just what was installed—it’s what condition is it in today.

We put together a short breakdown of why hardness testing plays such a critical role in both material selection and ongoing maintenance.

Curious how others are using hardness testing in their inspection programs—especially in high-temp or high-wear environments.
